I'd go for closed back, but it depends on the sound you want.

Closed back = Emphasized low-end

Open back = More balanced. Highs and high mids more pronounced.

Or go 1/2 or 3/4 back for the best of both worlds.

Vintage 30? No offense, but... ew. I'm just not a fan, sorry.
They have completely different sounds. The one difference I remember right off hand is that the closed back has strong forward projection, whereas an open back will allow the sound to spread more evenly into the room. I think it affects bass a bit also, but I forget how.

for an Orange, i would close the back, it'd be a more vintage tone
Out here you've gotta know where your towel is!

I believe that Vintage 30s really need a close back once you hit them with volume and gain. For about the same price, consider a GH12 30s or a mixture. If not going high gain, Vintage 30s are great even in an open back where you get a nice airy natural feel. Speakers, however, generally do much better in a sealed environment or a ported design. The movement of the cone is more controlled in a sealed or ported design. If you are going open back, be very careful on your dimensions, size of opening and place of opening or it could sound like shit.

i'd prefer open or half open.. closed is too compressed for me.
