Ok, I have searched the forums and I have found nothing about what I am going to say. Obviously, there are a lot of "what metal pedal to buy" thread in here. Almost everyday there's a new one. And some users get flamed when they say "get the boss ones. They're the best". As some of us prefer to get a tube amp + tubescreamer for metal, clearly some of us cannot afford one.

So I made this thread to share with you guys my metal tone. I did not use any amp in here. Direct recording only. Oh, and please excuse my playing.

I use the tech21 sansamp gt-2
EDIT:
I used my tech21 sansamp gt-2 MIC: classic. MOD: Clean. AMP: California.
Boost by Digitech Bad monkey

Flame me if you hate my tone and still want the boss mt-2, metal core or even the metal muff. I dont care. It's all about personal preference. So go buy them.

What's the difference between overdrive and distortion? How is it that guys like Slipknot and Strapping Young Lad get their distortion tone from OD pedals?

(I'm dumb.)

Because they use their OD to boost their amp.

Right, but I'm talking about amps that don't have distortion channels.

I agree with the OP. I also use a pedal that does the same thing. The AMT DT-2. Essentially a cheaper Siberian made GT-2. Blows that boss/digitech/metalmuff crap out of the water.

http://profile.ultimate-guitar.com/mogar/music/

Clip called "AMT DT-2 Tone sample". It was also recorded direct with no post eq, just a little stereo panning.
AMP:
5150 combo
GSP1101 + Tech 21 PE60

GUITARS:
ESP LTD M-255 w/ SD Full Shred
Kramer Vanguard w/ JE-1000 active preamp
Douglas WF-150sn w/ GFS "Hot Lead" set

EFFECTS:
Bos SD-1 (boost)
AMT DT-2

Nice tone. Ever tried boosting it with your sd-1?
I forgot to mentioned that I used my digitech bad monkey as a boost.

Yup. Sounds great. Usually use that for leads and the British setting on the DT-2 for rhythm, but I just wanted to show what just the DT-2 can do alone for that clip (leads in clip are of the California settings).

No prob. Anything to educate people. I always end up doing a facepalm when I see a crap load of recommendations for MT-2's, ML-2's, and Metal Muffs. Granted, these pedals aren't bad and the MT-2 is great when modded, but people just keep flocking towards the GC brands instead of doing a little research.

That's because unless you luck out with a great used find, the only pedals available for under $100 are the common brands. Although a lot of people on these forums buy those cheap under $100 distortion pedals and then combine it with a cheap equalizer when they realize how much it sucks instead of just buying a nicer distortion pedal in the first place. And the number of people who do this....

I don't understand what you're on about - you've already been told how it works.

Distorted amp+tubescreamer or similar overdrive=metal tone

if you use a single channel amp crank the gain, (roll back your voume knob on your guitar for cleans)then boost your signal with an overdrive or distortion.

I heard these pedals sounded better when recorded directly or through a PA than a through a normal amp (due to the speaker emulation, all hearsay though).

The AMT California Sound sounds promising btw.
