So I'm allowed a new guitar for christmas.. But I'm stuck.
I wanted an ESP Ltd EC-500 because I love the EC series guitar and they come with EMG pickups, which is a bonus for me.
Then I found I could get a Dean Razorback V (with a Dean hardcase) for £600 including setup.
I really don't know which to get 'cause the ESP Ltd has EMGs and I've been after some for a while, but I really love the Razorback.

This is coming from a Dean owner who has owned newer Deans and still own the older ones.

Don't buy new Deans.

Never buy new Deans.

They are nothing like the guitars the company made it's name from. The quality of the guitars went down the shits, they have cheaper parts and they just feel very toy like. They don't even use the original neck profile. They charge way to much for the guitars too.

The Korean Deans are glorified Epiphones.

The lower end ones are. I bought my G/F one of those MLXP's and it's chinese, but for the price it isn't a bad guitar. It's actually better then i expected. No comparison to my 79, but will certainly run with guitars in it's price range.

+1

Especially in UK, Dean's are insanely overpriced here along with ESP / LTD. A bit sad.

But TS, go with the LTD EC-500, you'll definately won't be disappointed with it.

Have you tried out the Dean Razorback or the EC-500 yet though?

Yeah, I guess. I really doubt I got a bad one, since the '79 series Z I had gotten rid of plays just like any other 79 series. Plainly. There's no character to them. Even the new higher end ones are a bore.

I put the covered pickups from a USA Exotica into my ML. You can't believe the difference. It sounds and looks twice as expensive as what it did. The covered pickups gave it a classier look and the tone improved dramatically. I wanted an ML for about 2 years before I got this and I couldn't be happier with it.

How about the US Made Custom Shop Deans? DO they live up to old standards?

I've been thinking about getting a DFH, or finding my old guitar teacher and buying his 81' Dime-signed hardtail ML.

Which one? And if I do get the 81' ML, should I shove in a recessed FR?

I disagree with that. Maybe that's true for the higher end Deans . They're probably overpriced, ESPECIALLY anything that has to do with Dimebag but I bought a slightly-better-than-entry-level guitar for $270 and the only problem I've had with it is that the tone nobe got ****ed up and I just had it fixed for $25. I've been playing that guitar daily for a year and a half straight and it has worked nicely for me. Though I'm hoping to upgrade ASAP, I can't say I've had complaints about that guitar for it's price. Sounds pretty good and it played pretty nicely. The action on it was actually amazing to me too. lol I haven't played a guitar with action that I liked better than my Vendetta.

Even so, after saying all that, I'd still choose the LTD over the Razorback. XD

Oh and I still have all the original strings on it too as when I bought it.

What do you think the letters in 'EC500' are short for?

maybe EC is short for EClipse...just throwing that out there.

Anyways don't get a new Dean, they're common and tacky and overpriced.

The name EC is obviously derived from Eclipse, but they're different guitars. EC's are mady by LTD, and are made of cheaper materials, production line, etc. etc.
