In general, if you could get an amp in either, say, 50 w and 100 w, would they both have the exact same tone or would there be differences?

the really technical answer is the bigger output transformer, the better it sounds. so, theoretically a cranked 100 watt amp sounds better than the 50 watt version cranked. however, a 50 watt amp is a little easier to get to that sweet spot with out being really really really loud, it will only be really really loud. there isnt much of a volume difference, though. i would go with the 50 watt.

I agree. To get double the decibels you need 10 times as many watts.
