Hey guys

i was just wondering what the most important things are to know when you want to teach people guitar?

i've got from now till next summer ('09) but i'd really like to start working on it now, so i dont get shown up by students

im ok at alternate picking, and my pinky's ok as well...

basically when teaching beginners, its all about learning just the basic chords some little skills to increase finger Strength and accuracy like chromatic runs

its also crucial to teach them some sort of stretching excercise
make sure u take a metronome as well

and one more thing make sure u show the kids a good thumb position cause most of the times my students when starting out struggle cause they cant get there thumb right so make sure u watch out for that

cool...should i go both ways, and teach them classical stuff as well as the ususal rockschool stuff? (i'd probably use rockschool it's helped me a lot personally)

and also, i'd probably start at beginner level

it all depends on the student generally younger kids just want to rock the world so u would be doing alot of stuff on alternate picking, power chords, rock solos etc etc

but i had this one student who is about 11 been play for two school terms now and didnt want a bar of rock and just wanted to learn classical, even though u doesnt have any cds or listened to much music at home

so its really the first lesson u teach is the basic string names fret, etc plus ask them questions of what they like

Well first of all, ask your student what his/her goals are and what they would like to learn. You can learn a lot from them just by asking them that. Ask em if they want to learn theory or just cords or just even songs. Go from there, use your best judgment to decide what to teach. Ive taught people where they just wanted me to show them how to play songs lol, easiest 25$ of my life

i was thinking 2 - a day per week for each

for me its 1 on 1 tutoring but i do have a bro n sis at once
i do on av 7-8 students per day with me max at 10
30 min sessions

u find that with beginners its to hard to have more than 2 (well i do anyway) cause u have to show every one indiviually how to play chords and etc, cause basically most beginers as we all no at some stage struggle with hand positions and finger strength

yeh, im sill at school, so i'd likely only be able to spare 2 days a week, for a couple of hours..i was thinking of maybe either (considering i know the local school teacher) helping them along if they're students of his, or starting them off before they go there...or possibly just teaching them for a few years, and letting them move on

Lol if you never taught before, start with one. You might not even like it lol, the first person i taught was "difficult". but if you think you can do 2 a day per week go for it. Its harder to find students if you dont really have a good resume, parents dont want to pay some random person all kinds of money when they got a friend at work who would probably do it for free hah.

that is a good idea, but remember when ur starting out teaching, u probably be experimenting with what works and doesnt for a few months before u find the perfect formula
so just be patient with urself, ur exercises and the students

what is it with you, and loling?

what i meant was, 2 hours, 1 on 1, two days a week, two different students

I figured you would have done some kind of research on it, instead of just asking a bunch of people how to do it, thats why im loling.

but yeah man, just go for it. Try it out, youll see how it is. Its not that hard to teach beginner level if you know like 5 cords and smoke on the water and a few ac/dc songs

so close-minded - im asking my guitar teacher on friday, but i was thinking of something like Bad Moon Rising or Yellow Submarine if they're not fussed, and something like Highway to Hell or Smoke on the Water if they're more inclined with Rock

also, ive got a couple of classical books, and i'd probably teach using RockSchool as well
