I think he's just muting the strings and picking. I've never really noticed that before, even when I play along.

It sound distinctive though, not just regular playing, and I've think I've heard it before, in classic rock or some western stuff, not sure, maybe blues, I can't think of it, it sounds amazing though.

Oh yeah. That's a killswitch. Not sure of the notes, but the technique is

b--18b--

and then he's using the switch while holding the notes. Do you have the tab? Those are just examples i used.
