WTF is the difference between a "water resistant" and a "water proof" wrist watch?

#1
So I purchased a wrist watch from the local israeli shop. The guy told me its water resistant.... a weeks later it broke when I was taking a swim in the pool.

I go over there to try and return the damn thing but the guy kept telling me "It's water resistant, not Proof".... and would not refund the money or exchange it... he said I was trying to swim with the watch...

What the funk is the difference between the two and am I geting screwed here?

water resistant = not totally water proof
water proof = completely sealed so water can not damage anything
#3
I'm almost certain water resistant is to protect it from rain and stuff, not to be submersed in water.
And water proof is for underwater use.

If I remember correctly a water resistant watch is fine if you should accidentally drop it in a bucket of water and pick it up right after. Though if you go swimming with it it will break. A water proof watch is...well waterproof.

water resistant, wear in the rain
resistnt wear in the pool

No... water resistant means that a splash of water shouldn't break it.
Waterproof means you can swim with it.

Naw you ****ed yourself...

There is a difference I'm not gonna lie
#13
If he clearly said it was water proof, yes. If he didn't....you've got nothing on him and he has no obligation to refund it.
#14
no you are clearly wrong
water resistant is only for like getting damp while washing your hands.
how much was the watch anyways?
#15
Waterproof won't take damage from swimming, although I find it weird to check what time it is if I fell in the water....

Basically water resistant = Slightly less vulnerable to water than a regular watch
Water proof = 50m generally means you can shower in it. 100m means you can swim (that's what my dad said and he's a sucker for watches)

most watches i've seen will say something like "water resistant up to 50m". i've always thought that they just stopped using "waterproof" because it isn't technically correct. what did the watch cost? is it digital? did it have any description of its water resistance on the package it came in?

edit; ah, if it was $89, i would say that is worth putting some time into to get it refunded. would it be possible to get it repaired?

My mind is going. I can feel it.

what the hell...that is a shitload for a non waterproof watch...
at that price you can get a stainless steel swiss tissot, with sapphire crystal glass(almost impossible to scratch, unless with another gem) and completely waterproof...

You're really not paying attention.
No, "water resistant" does not mean "waterproof".
If anything, it means "don't swim with this watch on, dumbass"

He probably made up that retail price too, man. At that price you can get some really fancy watches (like my tissot). Generally, any watch costing over 100 dollars, should at least be waterproof 50m.

Proof is for under water use

Resistant is for walking in the rain or whatever

Though water proof watches can be cracked by pressure and then water will get in if your scuba diving into a really deep place
