Would I plug my Xbox 360's component cables into one of the component slots, then connect the hdmi out on my receiver to my television?

Yeah but I need to connect the xbox to the receiver, and then the receiver to the screen.

You already said the answer in your post. If that doesnt work, connect the component out on your reciever to the component on your tv.

It probably would have taken you less time to just try this out than post a thread on this

heres how I run my PS4

Video: HDMI > TV
Audio: Optical > receiver > speakers around the room.

component cable with the Red, green and blue is for video only.
HDMI is an audio/video cable.

You can probably ditch the Component cable...
Sometimes the receivers have HDMI ports on them, mine doesn't so I run directly to the TV and use a Harmony remote to switch it all over in one click.

Best way to know how to wire your game unit is to go though the manual.......
