Hi,

For a little while i've felt my self more and more drawn to a nice fender strat, for i love the looks, feel and tone of them.
I dont really know which ones are good and which arent, so if you could help me choose that would be great.

Im looking for a strat that has a maple neck, not a signature model, made in japan or US, new or used and all for no more than lets say... £500 ($1k)

Thanks, ben

or that price range, the new American Standards feel pretty good to me, and sound nice as well. Try one before you buy it, but to me the rounded neck feels great, I'd try one with that budget.

The American standard is too expesnive over here unfortunatly, but im interested in that deluxe...
#7
Im very interested in the deluxe, will it sound good for screaming kinda leads, as well as quite glassy clean?
Im not sure how each strat differs in tone...

Strats are just flat out real workhouses, can do anything you want it do, just need the skill to do it, Humbucker in the bridge if you need a little more power ... http://www.guitarampkeyboard.com/en/fender-1-strat-hss/8205

Or this Dueluxe Players Strat a real nice guitar ... http://www.guitarampkeyboard.com/en/fender-deluxe-players/66856

Good luck finding a Japanese one, but if you do, grab it if it's in decent condition. They were well-made and terrific bargains when new back in the 80s.

I'll have to put the Classic T models on my to-try list. Shame the finish options there are Anachronism Gold, Nuclear Waste and Aged Clown, because in principle the plaintop is right up my alley.

they are assembled in mexico, but use american made parts. if you dont like it being assembled in mexico, then do a re-haul on the instrument yourself when you get it. this will also get you to know your own instrument better, and learn how to truly make it sound the best as possible through proper setup.

The Highway One is definitely great value, I flirted with buying one before I ended up buying the guitar I have now. It's basically an American Made Strat, if you dig the nitro paint, you should love it.

However, make sure you check out some used guitars. I'd recommend craigslist, as you get a chance to actually see the guitars in person before you buy them (unlike ebay). I bought my American Strat used, and I think I love it more because of that. I think if there's any guitar you should buy used, it's an American Strat, they're durable, and generally, I think people take care of them. If you're serious about an American Strat, but you don't want to break your budget, really take a look at some used strats.

you probably can only afford used or a copy brand if you want american.
unless you go wt a HW1 like said.

i got my used fender american vintage 57 reissue for $1000 with a hard case and the kit that comes with most strats. it took me about 3 or so weeks to find it and i have to say, it is the best guitar in my area for $1000 that fits my style.

for $1000, you can get a new standard strat with a hardshell case. for my style, i don't like the "new type of fender tone" with those noiseless pickups and all that jazz however they might be great for you.

best thing you can do, go to ALL the guitar stores near you and just pick up and play ANY that catch your eye. maybe even some non strats. make sure you use the same amp with the same settings for easier comparison. for me, i had to drive an hour and a half away, but it was worth it. this guitar center was huge (they even had a 56 les paul gold top for sale for $80,000. haha, what a site that was.) and they had a much, much better selection than any other guitar store i've ever been too. also, one last tip. take your time. it took me 3-4 weeks or so to find my guitar. don't rush it or you will be mad in the long run.

i know he's got a grand US, but arent fenders generally more expensive in the uk?

highway 1s are a mix of mexican and american parts assembled in america, and given the MIA tag.

they are nice for the money, BUT so are the Mexican made Classic player strats and deluxe player's strats.
they all have their advantages.

there are deluxe MIM guitars and MIA deluxe players. mines a MIA. and very nice.

make sure you check out the link i put in my last post. it goes into all the specific strats, how they differ.
get the one that's best for the music you like to play.

For £500 you can get a custom shop strat on ebay!

Search "Fender custom shop" on ebay and there'll be load of Custom shop strats for around £400 (cheapest) to £2000 (dearest), but you can get some nice deals!

Other wise, American strats are usually a minimum of £600.
Fender Japan (low end) about £300, higher end around £500
Highway one about £500.
They'll be the ones you should look at

Highway One is the way to go if you ask me, I preferred it to an American Standard a couple of years ago when I got it, mine is an older one or one of the spwcial ones they did(I'm not 100% sure) though without the ridiculously sized headstock.

yeah. pretty much anything american-made, apart from the highway one (which is jenny said is a bit of a grey area regarding place of manufacture), is going to be over budget (new) in the UK. You can get some MIJ/CIJ ones for around the £500 mark though (make sure they're the non-export models)... depends on what you play, if you need 22 frets, etc. etc. etc.

I'll vouch for the Highway One series, mine can play about anything I throw at it. The HSS model is very versatile. Run's around $750, you can usually pick them up for $700 though.
