$300 budget, play mostly hard rock/heavy metal (ALOT of Metallica). Any suggestions?

I would get a RG2EX1, pretty solid for that price range.

"Designed by EMG" pickups aren't great, but there aren't many guitars in that price range that come with great pickups. The pickups on that thing will give you a satisfactory tone, albeit somewhat muddy at high gain.

Make sure you play it since some people like the neck, and others don't.

It's alright man, there's actually a couple semi decent options in that price range.

I remember thinking my Fender Starcaster was pretty cool =]

I can only think of that Ibanez RG that was mentioned. I think there is a Dave Mustaine Signature under that price range.
