I am wanting to take up Aikido martial arts.

So how do I go about finding a teacher, and buying any equipment (such as pads for sparring, and such)?

Hold up a big sign in the asian part of your town saying "Looking for aikido teacher! Will pay with dollars!"

This. I know some hoboes in China-Town. They got mailboxes and shit. No joke. They could help you out for some change.

Yeah man, have a look on the internet, thats how i found my jujitsu class, i done it for about a year and a half, maybe 2 years but i got out of the swing of things once college started and everything, would love to get back into it though, the website looked really crap and the pictures of the dojo looked bad but the teaching and classes were great, i got my equipment shortly after going there, the first few times i just went in t shirt and jogging bottoms.
WHOMP

Think of that next time you are not allowed to laugh.
