As Metallica does it? Down.

You can alternate pick it though

I down pick it, its easier for me, and Metallica probably does too, but whatever works for you.
bands/artists I've seen: Protest the Hero, LIGHTS, Andrew Bird, Flight of the Conchords, Incubus, Nine Inch Nails, Between the Buried and Me, Guthrie Govan, Cynic, The Devin Townsend Project, Scale the Summit, The Dillinger Escape Plan, Darkest Hour

down the way i play it, and metallica. should be find if u alternate though

all downpicking my friend...that's what makes that song so brutal

just practice everyday alongside the song and you'll be playing it as good as metallica in no time
#8
In an interview James Hetfield said he down picks it to make sound alot harder and heavier.

Metallica plays the whole song down-picked. But, do whichever suits you better, everyone's different

nah, start off at a half the tempo and once you feel it coming right, you can speed up, but not all the way up

I'll try and give some advise, unlike everyone else here..

If you downpick, relax your arm as much as possible. More specifically your forearm, as it will start to cramp up if you're tense.

If you're alt picking, first try it slower palm muting all the notes, so you understand the picking pattern and you can just ignore lifting your hand off the bridge. Once you have it down all PM's at full speed, only then try it with the non-palm muted notes.

Hope that helped.

When I started playing guitar I would alternate pick everything. However, I read in interviews that James would down pick his songs, so I use that when playing Metallica. It sounds a lot better when done with all down picks, in my opinion.
