What's 300 pounds in Australian dollars?

Oh yeah, what do you want to use it for? Depending on what you want to use it for depends on how good the lappy needs to be and therefore how much you need to spend.

I wouldn't get either of those unless you also have a desktop or intend on investing in a good docking system, they're more desktop suppliment computers than replacement as they stand.

You realize that by Christmas, those'll be obsolete, right?

not for what i want tbh - Sims2 shouldnt challenge the latop imnow looking at - Budget has stretched to 370 pounds, possibly pushing for 400

i'll need to order at least a month beforehand - so like, 25th November, so we can wrap it and everything (younger sister believes in santa)

why has no one said to wait till AFTER christmas???
You can get spome AMAZING bargains, especially on electronics.
Oh and by the way, if you have room, just get a desktop IMO you will get a lot more performance. If you want to use it on the move ONLY THEN get a laptop.

Get an Alienware Area-51 Laptop.

Alienware is the biggest ripoff brand in existence. I have one and there is absolutely nothing to justify the $1000 I spent on it. It's not even like Apple Macs where the quality and functionality and design are actually good. I have both an Alienware LP and a MBP and I'd gladly shell out $1800 again for the MBP.

Anyways, TS, if you just want to do basic computer stuff like checking the Internet or using Word, just go with the Asus. If you want do more, I recommend nothing less than a MacBook Pro.

the issue with getting a desktop, is that my room is tiny, and i really need to space, so theres not an argument for it in that sense

also, i cant wait till post-christmas, because my little sister believes in santa, and therefore i need to get a present at the same time as her

Alright, if all you want it for is basic editing stuff and Sims 2 it doesn't really need to be that good a computer. No offence to Sims 2 but it doesn't exactly stress computer hardware.

Ok, I had a look at the Toshiba Sat Pro A300 and that one looks like it'll be fine for what you want to do. I'd say go with that one. And I must say that website has a very extensive list of the specs of the computer. Quite comprehensive, it pleases me greatly.

If you want a laptop that has the same technical capacity as a high apps desktop you'll need something much more powerful than a mini laptop.

Well, first off, the Asus one is an Eee Pc, its the size of a paperback book, its super compact and has very low specs, word processing and internet is the most you will get out of it, no games, i doubt that even Sims2 will work on it, its like a Palm pilot. The Dell isn't too much better, but, is an actual laptop so i would go with that.
You have to think, though, that 30gigs is not gonna get you that far, OS and other apps like MS Office will take like 10 (or more) GB and that doesn't leave too much space for other things. Also laptops are not very easily upgradable, so you wont be, easily that is, able to swap that 30 GB HDD for a 150GB or something.

Agreed. To get a laptop with the same specs as a desktop you'd need to spend more on the laptop than you would on the desktop.

Also agreed. While I can't comment on the Eee PC and Palms and stuff as I don't know much about them, it is quite true that it's a lot harder to upgrade a laptop than it is to upgrade a desktop. So basically what you buy in the first place is what you're stuck with. Keep that in mind.

He probably doesn't have the money but this is my recommendation as well.

I'm not a Mac fanboy. I use a variety of different platforms and builds and I know quite a bit, but MacBooks and MB Pros, especially the new ones are unbeatable and worth the price. Everything else is just inferior.

The thing about laptops is that you really have to take into account the physical design of the computer to ensure durability, portability, and heat management. It's not just about the specs inside, which there are laptops that surpass the specs of the MBP. MacBooks have an unmatched design quality. With their new single-piece design, it's going to be even better with less defect rate in production and stronger durability.

There's a fair few good points you raise there. Design is definitely much more important for laptops than it is for desktops that only get moved when you take them to a LAN. I can't comment on the MBP's as I don't know much about them, but you do have to take into consideration that some Windows software won't work on Macs, so you might be forced to use alternatives. This can present a problem in a Windows-dominated society.

Also, not that it really matters, but TS is a girl.

You can install Windows on a Mac. You can treat it just like any other laptop.

That's a terrible choice...

It's going to be extremely slow. Design is bad too.

Why don't you give us some information such as your budget limit and what you think you'll be doing on your computer?

1) Go to shop.
2) Ask for help and pick out yourself.
3) Do laptop things.
4) ???????????
5) Don't make any form of profit because you're buying.

ok, i've said already, but here we go.

Budget - 300 - 350 pounds, POSSIBLY 400

main tasks - School work, light gaming (Football Manager, Halo, Sims2, Guild Wars), Internet

You did already say it. However mentioning Halo and Guild Wars changes things slightly, cause I think Guild Wars needs a bit more in resources than Sims2 does.

In regards to what to get I'd say listen to Xiaoxi, he seems to know what he's talking about, at least more than I do.

TS, I'm just going to give you a list of specifications that you should look for in order to get the most out of what you want to do:

Intel Core 2 Duo 2.13ghz or above
2GB DDR2 RAM or more
120GB 5400RPM HDD or more
Windows Vista Home Premium
Integrated graphics with at least 256MB of video memory

Anything less will not be able to run smoothly at all. I recommend either HP or Dell if you're really on a budget. However, if you want to get the most value for your money on a laptop, get a MacBook. The newest one is $1300 and the old one is $900, I think.

Remember, it's better to shell out more money for a good durable and seamless laptop than to be cheap and have a clunky piece of shit.

I wouldn't go with Vista Home, I would personally go with what my friend's running which is called Vista Server or something? It's got something to do with networking in the name and it basically makes network stuff a hell of a lot easier. I'm just thinking for the future in case she wants to hook the laptop up to the home network for internet and things like that.
