2 part counterpoint is about a whole semester at a conservatory (university for musicians). 3 part counterpoint is another whole semester. 4 part and combining all the rules would probably take a whole year. All this is with a music professor, you think anyone could explain you an easy way?

Counterpoint is the art of combining two melodies. Riffs are melodies. What a singer sings is a melody. Bass lines are melodies.
If you're writing for a band and you want each melody to be perfectly individualised and consonant with all the other melodies, you'll want to know counterpoint.
