Hello all, Im having a tough time right now money wise in my family. Yesterday I was going to school and I figured I could just walk through the door of the subway because I had no money on me whatsoever. Not even two dollars which for anyone who lives in new york city knows that thats how much it costs to go on the train. So I quickly walk through the emergency door and two cops standing on the bannister looking lazy as S*it say "excuse me sir, who told you you can do that". I said to them that the machine ate my two dollars and i have no money left on me. The woman cop shaked her head as if to say "who cares". She right away took out her little book and asked for my ID. The thing that pissed me off the most was that she hardly spoke english and shes giving me a ticket for trying to be early to my college class. Anyways, she gave me a $100 dollar fine and I have to pay it within the next 15 days or I can choose to go to court to fight the ticket. Does anyone else know how I can possibly get out of it or if I have a good enough case to fight it? I have no idea how Im going to pay this off. Im working one job paying for school and acting classes right now. I would feel like a piece of crap if my mom had to pay it. Can anyone help me out?

You broke the law. You tried to get on the train without paying.

You could chose to fight the ticket, which case you'd probably lose, but it'd give you more time to gather the money while they set up a court date.

Either way, you have to pay the ticket.

really, i'd explain the situation at hand. That requires fighting it in court though. What can happen if you lose the fight over the ticket?

I dont know, I have been trying to call the number that the cop circled on the ticket but i keep getting a busy signal.

Have enough of a case? Hell you don't have any case. You wanted to ride the underground for free and got caught. Sucks but that's how it is. Also, the cop didn't write you a ticket for wanting to be early to your college class, she wrote you a ticket for trying to ride the underground for nothing.

Your right, your very right. It just sucks that I got it from an immigrant cop.

her barely speaking english has nothing to do with your problem, so dont be a racist.

Immigrant or not, she's a cop nonetheless and she caught you breaking the law.

Don't be a racist, it is irrelevant to your concern.

3 options:

1) Pay the ticket right now
2) Chose to fight it in court, which leaves you more time.
3) Spend a few nights in jail to pay your ticket.

If you lived in New york city, you would feel the same way. We put up with a lot of crap in this city. We pay high taxes we deal with crappy people, crappy jobs, crappy living. Even when you explain yourself and say that your trying to get to school early to make a better life for yourself and that your going through a tough time with money, an immigrant cop has the balls to say, it doesnt matter? Man, im in for a life of crime if thats the case.

Don't forget the crappy people trying to ride the underground for free - if everyone did this, where would the conductors get their pay? Not to mention upkeep fees.

I'm sure glad not everyone is such a lousy human being.

dude, dont be dumb, your standard of living has nothing to do with being racist.

Germans lived in shitty conditions during the depression, does that give their government the right to wipe out 6 million jews? no. so don't try and justify it. id say fight the ticket, considering you can lie and say the machine ate your money sounds good to me. atleast it will buy you time.

Haha, true, had you been caught by a local you could have had a New Yorker being pissed with you, which is a lot better.

actually, the new york cops in this city who are veterans usually let a person go when it is their first time getting a ticket for a minor offense. She shouldnt have asked me why I did that and still write the ticket. The machine ate my money so I gave them two dollars and now i have to give them 100 dollars so they get everything.

i live in New York and i don't feel the same way. if you don't have money then get a job dude. i mean c'mon...it's 2 dollars you just got in trouble for. you could have asked a bum on the street for 2 bucks and they'd probably have.

a cops job is to uphold the law and that's their main concern. you're not the only one who tries to get onto the trains without paying...and i'm sure more than one of them has used the excuse you did, honest or not. you broke the law and now you have to pay, that's how it goes.

If you lose the case the ticket will cost like 20 bucks more, but that gives you time to make the money

After re-reading your first post, you said you didn't have the money to pay the train ride. You lied to the cops to save your butt and you failed. Get over it or start a revolution.

Dude, you were lying, why are you so fussed? The cop probably hears that excuse all the time and is wise enough to not listen to your bullshit.

^what do you think, how many times she has heard that lame excuse?

Also, do you think, she lives in a fancy apartment at central park? She's probably in a very hard situation just like you, and she doesn't want to lose her job because of some kid who doesn't want to pay 2$.

Cause its not like I did it to be a D8ck. I was going to school to learn. I pay for school myself. lol, I never heard so many people who were on a cops side.

Yea, because cops are always dicks who are out toe put the man down.

Kid, it doesn't matter if you were going to school or if you were going to buy crack, you got caught without a ticket you have to pay. Suck it up and deal with it.

Maybe instead of breaking the law, you could have asked permission? They did say "Who said you could do that?" Which possibly means there is someone who can give you the permission to do so.

Yeah, but you broke the law.

"Your honor, I killed this prostitute to get to college early to learn!"
"Okay, it's alright, you'll only get a warning."

We're on the cops side, because they did their job and YOU broke the law. Stop trying to make up lame excuses.

It won't get on your record, since it wasn't a criminal offence, just a minor municipal law that you broke.

I think we all understand that you're in a tough situation and I don't say anything against trying to take a train without a ticket, and you got busted and that sucks. But you can certainly not blame the cop and especially not because she's an immigrant.
You need to learn that cops are people too, and she's probably in a financially tough situation too, so she doesn't want to get fired because of you.

Well, what do you expect her to do? Run around? They were probably there to look for guys like you, I mean it's not like your the first one to try this.

Also, you said she had a partner, so if she hadn't given you a ticket, the other cop might have told that to their boss.

If anything she wouldnt get fired because of me but because her and her partner were half asleep against a bannister looking really bored until dumb old me gave them something to do.

It sucks because someone could be dying but they would still take time out of their day to write me a ticket instead of a warning. Atleast a warning, atleast. Seeing as it was my first ever offense.

Yeah well, I don't think it's a fun job to stand there all day and look for people trying to pass by without paying, but as far as I'm concerned, police officers don't choose what they do, they get sent somewhere to do something.

Listen. She didn't have to give you a warning anyway. Her job is to punish people who break the law. You broke it, you have to assume your actions. Stop trying to put the blame on them, you're the only one to blame in this situation.
