Just wondering, how much would getting my bass painted simply cost professionally? I really mean simple, like one color, or at most, a two-tone, and maybe a little coloring on a few frets.

If you were to get it down professionally it would probably cost you an arm and a leg. I would get either your pops to help you out or a friend because it's not really all that hard.

Tape it off, buy the paint/primer you want, and ask a local auto body shop to do it? I've heard that suggested here before. Seems like it'd be a pretty easy thing for a shop that normally paints entire cars..
Nope, no sig here.

You would be better off painting it yourself. You will save from some over priced guy ripping you.
Agreed!

How about this?

Or check out some of the refinishing projects at the GB&C forum ... like mine ... click below.

Does your school have any auto body shop? I know some people who have painted guitars there.

And they would prolly do it for very little if anything.

TS, give it an EVH striped paint job. Haven't seen any basses with those.

ironically, the cover of the mag had EVH and his son, showing his custom EVH striped
bass.

Do it yourself. It will be fun and a learning experience and in all honesty cant be all that difficult.

I see way to many EVH stripes, do something original.

I wouldn't call what we have here on the Bass Forum a mentality. It's more like the sharing part of an AA meeting.

It's much more of a process to do than people think. A simple burst can take a fair while to do and can be very easy to mess up.

^I'm with delerium on this one.

I hate finishing but I keep trying. No matter how many careful steps I take, even solid colored glossy finishes don't ever quite line up with my standard of quality. I've probably done 5 or 6 instrument painting projects, and they keep getting better, but not a one has had the quality of finish I actually wanted. It's damn hard to do properly, or maybe my expectations are just too high.

I got bored and painted the scratchplate on my guitar, its easy and cheap, looks cool.

what kind of paint/finish would you have to use?

Everybody and their grandmother plays guitar. True men play bass.

it won't harm the bass, but it will harm the children, and I for one love the children.

I want to get it black, or maybe a two-tone between black and red (not the most original, I know), and then get the head a lighter shade of red. If I was going all out, I'd paint the fretboard to be a fade between the red on the head of the bass and the black on the body, but that's overduing my skills/budget.

not to mention paint can change your tone a bit. well, at least on fretless.

I don't got a fretless, but with my screw-ups, it would take about 4 coats, so yes, the tone would suffer. Not worth it...
