PRS Santana and a Mesa Mark I amp. They're discontinued, so... good luck.

This. The Santana MD isn't discontinued, though, i don't think, although the mesas are. I've gotten very close to his tone in guitar shop with a mesa DC2 and PRS mccarty

I've had tube amps for a while now, but never actually had any go down on me

maybe you're not saying the right things? an amp likes to know you care.

I was gonna say that too.

I could get a pretty convincing Santana tone with my F-30, using the neck pup on my strat with the tone rolled off.
I don't give a shit if you listen to me or not

think it can be done with a few additions to my gear list? les paul, and crate v18?

^Eh, santana's sound is american (the crate is rather british sounding) smooth and has a fair amount of gain. I'd say an od on the gain channel, use your neck pup and roll off the tone. That's probably as close as you'll get with your current amp.

One could say the same about most amps, to a degree.

sorry forsak, I had to delete my post

I realized that what I had said was incorrect, a dumble overdrive special is the best amp I have ever played on in my life, hands down

something like a Dumble for cleans, and a Mesa Mark I for dirty sounds, boosted with an Ibanez TS808. He also uses a Vox Wah, and I think there's a Marshall sandwiched somewhere in his rig.

Carlos pretty muched named the Mesa's "Boogies"

The quote from one of the hottest local guitar slingers, Carlos Santana was,
"Man, that little thing really Boogies!" Thus the name was born.

he also used to use SG's

I came up with this kick ass riff on my ukelele when I was 12. Find out two years later, it was smoke on the water. Got my hopes and dreams killed..

Santana's sound can be replicated remarkably easily. Close, anyway. Particularly his early sound. I have managed his early sound bang on (to my ears) with my Lace Sensor Strat (hollow swamp ash) and my Mesa amp. Play around. You'll be surprised how close you can get.

One other thing, though. He has a tendency to find the place on stage where he can maximize his use of controlled feedback and mark it. He then uses that spot and controlled feedback extensively.
