Check out this awesome avant-garde metal band from Canada.
They are relatively new (I think they formed in 2006) and quite funky.
It's like a mix of Between the Buried and Me, RxBandits, Protest the Hero, Sikth, and Mike Patton, with random death metal and thrash moments.

Myspace link:

Here's a vid of there song "Avian Taxi" (it's so stupid, it's awesome!):

Nao, discuss.

I remember checking them out a while ago after visiting Opeth's myspace (they're friends on there). They're okay, sometimes I find the vocals a bit generic though. The intro to "Windmills" is pretty epic, but in a hilarious way.

Shit name, shit band. I dont know if this can be called metal, put it in the 'crazy random name art student bands' forum or something.

I want to try that while playing the opening riff to "Tempting Time".

0-0-0-13-0-0-0-0-13 or something like that alalalala but It;s so heavy and off time and awesome and you could not f**k anyone to it.

I'm pretty sure that there already is one.

And with the band, they are alright, I detest the vocals, but everything else is okay. The songs aren't that well constructed and as such get a little boring to listen to.

It's actually a quote out of a Tom Waits song.

You know what? I think I will start an "Only Avant-garde metal" thread.
Sounds like a plan man.

Goody, I cant wait. I expect lots of people bragging about how open-minded they are.

Nope. Couldn't find one. I'll start it right now.

That's not really the point. I want it more as an exposure forum for virtually unknown bands that are unusual.
Your arrogance is just as bad as the pricks that I know will end up frequenting it.

Listening to 'avant-garde' or Jazz music does not automatically make you open-minded, just remember that.

atrocious name. truly awful.
The most merciful thing in the world, I think, is the inability of the human mind to correlate all its contents. We live on a placid island of ignorance in the midst of black seas of infinity, and it was not meant that we should voyage far.

What of the music my good sir?
The name isn't really that bad though. People are apparently freaking out on that.

The avant-thread is going decently.
Too much Bungle in my opinion though.
No elitists so far.

First of all, the name really is aweful, second of all, why did you expect millions of elitists to flame your thread?

Not this thread, my other thread (The Only Avant-Garde Metal Thread).
And I was expecting big flame wars between the posters and me (c what I...nvm).

Mainly between the posters. I think it may start soon enough. I took a small gib at Mr. Bungle (just that I believe they are slightly overrated). Let's see where this goes.

EDIT: Has anyone if bothered to check the music?
I know the name is stupid and the musicians stupider (seriously, check the vid for "Avian Taxi"), but it's all in good fun.

Yeah but no elitists would go flame an avante-garde thread. If we have a Deathcore thread in the Metal forum which goes unflamed, I think your Avante-garde thread will be fine. By the way, I'm almost positive there is already an Avante-Garde thread.

I never said it did, I ws more reesponding to your assumption that anybody who finds themselves listening to Avante garde or jazz will brag aabout being open minded. Which is a very narrow minded and ignorant thing to state, and as such you are a ****wit.

Name calling, how cute.

Read through any of the threads here that involve jazz or classical music discussions, and you will find countless posters listing off their diverse range of music.

'yeah well i have everything from cannibal corpse to wagner on my itunes'

etc.

Which is what I was getting at.

b-bb-but, I do have everything from Cannibal Corpse to Wagner on my Ipod!

**** that shit.
I don't honesty care if people have a diverse taste in music. That's cool.
What really irritates me is when people don't come up with there own personal preferences and lack conviction in what they truely believe. This goes from people bashing a genre or even a band just because of the people who listen to it (bashing rap and/or metal, and people who dislike Tool because of the Tooltards) to morons who list that they like everything but country.

God dang it, gimme sum twang bitches!

Nao, everyone chill the **** out. That thread is closed.
Stranglehold, your predictions of either avant-garde metal thread are, have been, and will be null.

So GTFO and take your cynism to recovering addicts and Jehovah Witnesses.

On topic:
This thread is for discussing What's He Building In There? and letting some people know of them, even though most people apparently hate the vocals, while a good portion hates all the elements of the music in itself.
Which is nice to know, but I must disagree.
So let's get back on topic and discuss which song do you dislike the most.

{That quip was not for hate-thread purposes; if you can't see what I'm doing with it, then you are quite an idiot}

Corefag?
hahaha!
That's good. I'm gunna use it now.

And finally, we are back on discussion of the band.

I'm gunna go look for their debut too; you should keep your eyes peeled for their next cd.
If these guys are core, they'd have to be labeled as funkcore.
Everyone hates subdivisions, but they still exist.

This sounds like a less technical Protest The Hero with (only slightly) less feminine vocals. I don't like either band but I'd be surprised if a fan of one didn't like the other just as much.

the music isn't that bad, but I can't stand his clean vocals, I find them whiny. Sorry.

By the way, for amazing avant garde metal, check out Carnival In Coal.

THis is the most reasonable thing that I've seen this whole thread. And I still think it's way off base. But to each his own.

How is it way off base? The first thing that came to mind was PTH while listening to the video you linked. Are other songs different?

I think they are more in the realm of Rx Bandits and The Fall of Troy. God knows what he's saying, I just like the little ska texture that the vocals and funk give to their sonic pallete (5th time I used that metaphor).

Carnival In Coal is what got me into avant-garde.
They're pretty reminiciscent of these guys, with more overt comedy.

Lux Occulta and Maudlin of the Well are my all time favorites. Very dense music. I used to hate them and swear at their "pretentiousness".

The high vocals are not as prevalent as they are in that song. They appear somewhat in other songs.
PTH is more, twiddly. And not really as dissonant or skull****ing. They do some circus key clown music (in one song), but this is just all clowning. The song structure is somewhat similar, in the sense that there is no apparent structure.

Nevermind. Avian Taxi is really Protest-heavy. I can't believe I didn't notice it at first.

Is it the Sikth vocals that y'all are talking about or the strange, obnoxious falsetto?

damn, I thought I heard John Davis there for a second. hahaha
I wager on the second one.

I'm all about the serious business.

Oddly enough, this thread has had more elitists than either avant-garde metal thread.

Honestly listen to the music. Vocals aren't the only division between subgenres, although people act like it.
These guys have death metal spasms, thrash here and there, mathcore moments, and lots of avant-prog.

Get this the fukk out of the metal forum. At best it can be called hardcore with metal elements.
