i am able to improvise lead pretty well, but if someone tells me to play a chord progression i always just end up playing some boring progression. even when i add more complex chords, it still never really sounds that great to me. does anyone have any advice to help me on this?

pour some soul into it

You could always move the 5th's around to get some 'outside the box' tones. Or better yet, play the same chord in a different positions. Good luck and happy shredding!!!

Learn the basic triads that are in each key first if you don't already know them, then use your theory knowledge to work out which extentions to use in each key.
