If you can count them as metal, I Never Dreamed by Black Label Society, although the song is definately not metal.

^They sound like typical gothic metal, not doom metal

and those bands got absolutely nothing on bands like Warning

Fiddler on the Green - Demons and Wizards

This is probably the most moving piece of music I've ever heard. It's so beautiful in its simplicity. Hansi's vocals are incredible. The climax when it switched to the electric guitar is so emotionally driven. I love this song.

half of the songs mentioned in this thread are "sad" because they are horrible.

"Here I am wide open, surrendering to your side;
I have laid down my armour,
I have no sword at my side.
I leave behind me the ruins of the fortress I swore to defend;
I leave behind me foundations;
I'll leave you a man I'll need you to mend.
And through all the battles around me
I never believed I would fight.
Yet here I stand, a broken soldier,
Shivering and naked, in your winter light......"

I love you.

The break at exactly 2 minutes is an amazing bit of post-black metal, and it's one of my favorite parts of the album.

those shrieks just bleed emotion...

have you heard Alcest's "Le Secret" ep?

its got the shoegazey Alcest sound, but with a bit more BM influence, i'm not sure how you feel about Souvenir's d'un Autre Monde, but this should appeal to you even more if you haven't heard it already

WHAT THE **** IS WRONG WITH HALF THIS THREAD?
If a metal artist writes a non-metal song, it doesn't make the song metal! My hope is leaving because of this thread! Also, metal is one of the biggest carriers of sad songs and all you can think of is In This River and Fade To Black?

anyway,
Swallow The Sun - "Through Her Silvery Body"
Intestine Baalism - "The Avenger Full Of Vengeance On God"
Drudkh - "Solitude"
Agalloch - "Hallways Of Enchanted Ebony"
Warning - "Watching From a Distance"
