i had my first jazz guitar lesson today after just playing metal for about 2 1/2 years, and the first thing my teacher told me to do was change my right hand picking technique. before i was doing it something like this http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=p14mk-jEuFI&feature=related with my right hand fingers on the guitar and the slightly angled to the string. he wants me to change it to something like this http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=J3Eo1bXom2I

is this a better way to do it? he says that its alright that ive got as far as i have with my current technique, but to take me further it would be a lot better to do it his way. is he right?

He's right and I would also say if you're playing jazz then incorporating economy picking into your repertoire would probably be a good idea; it lends itself much more readily to the arpeggio ideas that jazz frequently uses.

You'll get used to it and be much better off for the effort, now back to the woodshed with you!

My technique is similiar to Dave Mustaine's. So basically, I shouldn't be resting my arm on the guitar?

Nothing is wrong with resting the arm on the guitar, just as long as your hand is free to move
