I just sanded the pearl black finish off my ibanez and iwas going to stain it but i wanted to make sure i didnthave to buy some kind of protective wood sealant to put on over it. i looked in the ULITMATE finshing painting thread and it said nothing about this so i think im being over cautious.

will it be good with just the stain?

Oil is an alternative to clear coat, if you prefer. I've always liked the gloss of a good lacquer though.

With enough sanding before application, oil can be quite shiny as well.

Oil = sanding, rubbing with a rag.

Foolproof.

Lacquer = proper spraying technique, wet sanding, plugging holes, must be done at a certain temperature, drying and curing times, buffing.

Not quite so foolproof .

Each finish has its pros and cons, but I do prefer lacquer for the gloss, and oil for the ease of application.
