This is for trill-ass trance only- ie: Emmanuel Top, Cosmic Gate, Juno Reactor, Deadmau5, Kindzaza- music that evolves and takes your mind with it on a journey of the mind and soul. This automatically disqualifies anything relating to manufactured, trendy crap that has a fan base that go to see a glorified stereo live up his undeserved fan. You all know who I speak of. Where're the real lovers at?

That Freddie Le Grand tune is house all the way, but the Emerson tune is massive

this thread is depressing already

fedde le grand (not freddie) produces house. saying he produces trance is like saying green day play death metal. take the time to try and differentiate between genres please.

yea it sounds pretty similar to me. i just group everything into trance/progressive if i can rave to it, its all good in my book.

both usually have a 4/4 time signature, but house is usually played at less than 130 bpm, and trance is usually played at higher than 130 bpm. there are lots of other differences too which i find hard to explain (especially since i don't listen to much house), but song structure is generally quite different and trance tracks usually have sweeping synths and epic buildups and whatnot that you wouldn't hear in house at all.

i found this explanation that may help a bit:
"I would say house focuses more on melody and has a more prominent bassline. It tends to be upbeat and provocative and makes you want to move your hips. It feels warmer and often uses more live-sounding samples. Most house is influenced at least somewhat by funk. You could compare house music to a funk band.

Trance focuses more on chord progression and layered sounds. Even when played at the same tempo as house it tends to have faster rhythms. So it's busier both sonically and rhythmically. Another big thing is the build-up, breakdown, drop structure. House builds and releases energy, but not to the epic extent that trance tends to. Trance will often have long breaks where there is no beat and the tension just keeps building until the beat drops back in. Trance can be uplifting but it tends to have a more dramatic and sometimes dark mood."

from http://www.answerbag.com/q_view/461357

i think the easiest way to understand the differences is to listen to a range of tracks from both genres and you'll soon be able to distinguish between the two.

an example of trance:
http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=_6KFq8s2fgg
note the fast tempo, breakdown and huge build up, sweeping synths, etc

an example of house:
http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=2TDdN_ARBAI
note the slower tempo, different song structure, that it still has a breakdown but no huge buildups or layered synths like a lot of trance does, etc

if you listen to more you'll soon figure it out

trance artists you could check out:
above & beyond
armin van buuren
sean tyas
john o'callaghan

and some house artists:
eric morillo
roger sanchez
armand van helden
deep dish

keep in mind that both trance and house have subgenres (like tech trance, progressive house, deep house, etc) so even under the 'trance' or 'house' umbrella one artist or track could sound rather different to another.

ahh i see now. does house tend to have vocals more often in it?

and could you recommend some solid trance or house without vocals seeing how a lot of music i listen to doesnt have vocals???

some more trance and tech trance tracks without vocals:

art of trance - madagascar (ferry corsten remix)
http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=40r-DmR4Hxo

selu vibra - divine
http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=62bOJBUoXWc

sean tyas - lift

marcel woods - cherry blossom
http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=DzD4VGDaOZY

sander van doorn - riff
http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=-7qdHdv1D3I

there are tons of awesome trance and tech trance tunes with vocals too... if you'd like to hear some let me know.

oh and if anyone wants to get a copy of any of these tracks in mp3 format (or other electronic tracks of just about any genre), try sites like:

Yes and no. It really depends on what type of house vs what type of trance. Psytrance or acid trance are not going to be have tons of vocals, because acid trance tends to be minimal, while psy trance tends to be more psychedelic. However, there are forms of trance, like prog trance that have vocals in them, and these tend to be very ethereal, once again designed to put you in that state of mind (some people will put anthem trance in this group, but anthem trance isnt trance).

Since house comes directly from disco, its vocals tend to sound more RnB-ish or even straight-up jazzy. However, genres like techhouse or the amazingly sick microhouse tend to be devoid of vocals. These are still considered house because of the way the beat is laid out: steady 4x4 (four kicks for four beats), with funky percussion and (and this is more for garage than regular house) super amounts of shuffle.

Like really predictable throw-away trance made simply to make money and get popular- kind of like jump up dnb. I mean this is obviously up to your own taste, but I think you can get where i'm getting at

Armin Van Buuren is amazing, definitly check out all of his albums. Other than him the only trance artists I know are local ones, and Infected Mushroom, but thats more psytrance I believe.

i don't really agree with what you're saying (about certain types of trance or dnb being made just for commercial purposes) as i think if someone was trying to make lots of money and didn't care about the music, they'd make typical top 40 style electro house or the like, the sort of thing that will be played in all of the commercial dance clubs over the world, rather than trance or dnb. but i guess you're referring to artists who have been very successful both in the trance scene and a bit in the mainstream too, like tiesto, paul van dyk, etc?

Ok thats enough! Too tired to keep adding more.

Otherwise I don't listen to too much Trance anymore. Some occasional mixes or songs I've had a while, or I'm still into Psytrance (but older is still generally better). I'll leave the psytrance for another thread though, as I spent more time than I would have liked collecting these links. Hopefully someone enjoys them, though I recommend looking for higher quality audio files of these if you can find them. Youtube quality leaves alot to be desired...

Oh, and as for the Tiesto track and remix, they are only linked to because I think they are the best works he has done (though I did enjoy some of his Magick series mixes).

If you don't feel any of the above is Trance then too bad for you, as I don't think you understand the concept

Blood Inside is a great album, it goes from songs like those to more minimalist/ambient electronic pieces
the funny thing is, they used to be a black metal band...

Man this thread is old as shit, but I like trance. Gouryella being my favorite group(The group is composed of Tiesto and Cortsen). They only made 4 songs, but it's like I have to cover everything in semen when I hear them. MY favorite song by them is Ligaya. The breakdown then the build for the song is so epic, it's ridiculous.

people interested in learning the differences between electronic genres should check out:
http://techno.org/electronic-music-guide/

it's very opinionated, but he does go over all the differences in song composition as well as tons of sub-genres and audio loops so you can hear the differences.

the only stuff i listen to anymore is all jungle ****. little minimal techno too.

yeah Infected Mushroom is more on the progressive/psy-trance side, but good nonetheless

trance is my favorite genre of electronic music, I even do a radio show of trance music at my college's radio station..fun stuff.

Artists I'd recommend to anyone interested would be:
- Above & Beyond
- Armin van Buuren
- Toby Emerson (although he spans multiple genres)
- Tiesto
- Paul van Dyk
- Markus Schulz

Amara - Pulse blew my mind when I first heard it, back when I was getting in to trance and the more epic the song the better it was.

Unfortunately the mp3 isn't available on TA anymore and its a bit hard to find.

I got 101 Trance Anthems... I think out of the 101 I deemed about 40 good enough to put on my mp3 player, which isn't bad.

For me trance is all about the catchy melodies, so I do like some of the more cheesy stuff, but y'know, its good for a quick listen.

I like psytrance too, but don't really know where to start, it a bit more obscure I think....

For me 'Acid Trance' is the real trance. As in trance made with a 303, and similar stuff made in the early '90s. Before it started to get all "epic" and cheesy and all that. There are still good trance tracks of course, but the early 90s stuff fits the name best. It can put you into more of a 'trance' state than newer stuff.
