right at the moment im trying to sort out a pedal board of sorts

basically i play anything from clapton to pantera but mainly metallica style stuff

atm i have a wah, and a distortion (metal muff)

its my birthday soon (under two weeks) and family are asking what i want, so i though this owuld be a good time to ask for pedals, i would quite like a phaser (cos they sound cool) and dont know what else

so if you could reccomend some other effects and the advantages of them for me

also which phaser you be best MXR phase 90 or electro harmonix small stone

Whammy pedal for the Dimebag stuff, and also for the Metallica solos, if you are without a Floyd Rose. Delay is always useful, and maybe reverd. If you can afford them maybe a phrase loop pedal, quite expensive though.

There are also different distortion pedals out there, maybe some other ones would be nice.

see if you can test drive a flanger and a phaser side by side. you may just like the flanger better.
maybe a chorus and a delay pedal as well.

happy (early) b-day!

I honestly see Compressors and Delays absolutely essential, so you might want to think about getting one of those.

^Metallica never uses a whammy and I'm pretty sure dime just used the floyd on his guitar.

An EQ is always useful, I'd get a script phase 90 or a small stone for a phaser.

Indeed, Metallica never use them, but Kirk uses a Floyd Rose on occasion, and depending on whether or not TS has one, he could use a Whammy. Dimebag did use his Floyd Rose but was also famous for his Whammy use aswell.

EQ is a good suggestion, aswell as a compressor. Happy birthday

^Ya learn somethin everyday. I though all those squealies were just up pulls on the floyd.

If you really want a phaser i'd go for the Small Stone, the Phase 90's seem to have somewhat lost their way in my opinion! Also i'd say a Delay would always come in handy, Artec make a decent Analogue delay at a good price...I think it's called the Twin head or something

Boss TU2
MXR Phase 90
Artec delay

They usually are, but in Becoming the riff features a Whammy and also other songs combine the Floyd Rose and the Whammy to good effect

Plus I would get one just for the crack, good pedals which you can have lots of fun with.

Please tell your parents to adopt me before my birthday.

Anyways, buy a delay. It's is one of the most useful next to distortion IMO.

Phase 90 is more subtle
Small Stone has a depth switch (Phase 90 has only one depth), but even the shallow depth mode is more noticeable than the Phase 90; also Stone slight volume changes as it sweeps with tube amps (but not with solid-state i don't think)
I think the Small Stone sounds better clean (why I have one on my board), but the Phase 90 is better distorted

Don't bother with an EQ unless you're only slightly unhappy with the tone you have right now. If you like your current tone, it's useless. If it's more than a minor problem, the EQ isn't going to solve it.

Whammy pedal is fun, but expensive. I'd upgrade your distortion before bothering with a Whammy pedal.

Delay is nice, but the lush analog ones are expensive, and the digital ones with tap tempo are also expensive. But there's some cheap digital ones that you could grab for under $100 if you want to try out slapback or quick decay delay. With quick decay settings, the difference between a $50 pedal and $300 pedal is slight.

cool ill have a look out for a delay and try out phasers so see wha i like.

im not so bothered bout the digitech whammy, im more a rhythm player and as fun as the octave setting might be i doubt highly that i will use it.

I also reccommend a delay, something like a Boss DD-3 would be good. It can be very useful to fatten up your tone a bit more and will come in use when covering songs that already use delays.

what reason would i need a delay just to ask, ive never seen the need for one reeli

I've been tempted to pick up a Phase 90, only because my Small Stones is the biggest [physically] pedal I have, and I'm trying to cut down on space/weight. I absolutely love my Small Stone, though. I highly recommend it.

if a band doesn't have at least 2 delay pedals per guitarist, they aren't allowed to be considered good.

You can use one for lead guitar. If you use it on a light setting it can give more depth and can sound almost reverb-like.
