I've noticed a lot in live performance videos, rock bands have what look like racks of sound processing equipment. The things you see in studios... how exactly are those used live? and are they necessary?

It's usually effects processors and stuff like that. There's all sorts of stuff that you can have though.
It can simplify use and setting up, if you hook it up with a good midi switching system.

Because in the studio, guitars and the other instruments get molded with super good equalizers and reverb units with automations etc.

It's to get a better sound more too the album in a live setting.
