well, i'm a guitarist but I can't find a band. So, i figured i'd learn how to play drums since drummers are always in high demand. What do I need to know before purchasinga drumkit? I have no idea. oh yeah, and i play pop and rock music.

Okay well, first of all, you've chosen a good genre for starting drums, since pop-rock stuff is some of the easiest around

A few questions =

1. Whats your price?
2. Do you think you'll actually stick with it? Have you played drums before?
3. Will you have time to practise/Will your parents let you practise in the house?

AWesomeDrummer makes a good point. Myself being a drummer, I NEED to add on to what he asked.

1) Even with a cheap, $300 - $500, you can make it sound good. Heads and hardwear are THE most important things.

2) Buy books, take lessons, maybe a music program in your school. You'll need it.

Good luck, happy findings.

I got a cheap SP drum set for that same reason and have been teaching myself. Granted i'm in a steady band as the guitarist now, but it's still fun to have the band switch up roles now and then.

Plus, if i'm at a jam and guitar is taken, it's super easy just to play drums and just listen to everyone else. I've learned a lot like that. It's also fun as a jam drummer because you really control the direction of the music. You can chose if it's mellow or if you want it to be really rockin'.

TL;DR
If you're just starting out, get a beginning SP set or something and learn how to play. Drummers are like left handed relieving pitchers, even f you're mediocre, you can still get hired because their so in demand.
