I've been playing guitar for about a year and a half and I'm looking for a new electric guitar. My current one is a Fender Squier Strat but i also have a Takamine acoustic which i use more often. I play in a band and I'm looking for a guitar that sounds good and won't break. I'm deciding between an Ibanez SZ320EX ($379) or a mexican-made Strat ($420)My price limit is somewhere around $400.

It'd be nice to know what genre's you play, but on a personal account, I love my Mexi Strat. I didn't know they shot up another $20 though, Fender's prices got higher in the worst time possible I guess.

i generally don't play metal or anything hard like that. I'm a rhythm guitarist so i generally play a lot of chords.

Personally I'd go the Strat, but I just don't really like Ibanezes that much. I think versatility with the Strat is a big plus, so is the clean tone.

Then easily strat. The Ibanez is a metal lead guitar, not a clean chords guitar.
