To posters that have been here for a while, this may seem foolish, but I'm sure you remember being embarrassed as you asked what something meant. These aren't necessarily things that are used on UG, but on other forums and places around the internet. This will be a thread that is always building. Feel free to ask questions about what something means, and it will be added to the list.

1337 - Language made of numbers and letters, sometimes meaning "cool"
2k3'er, 2k4'er, etc. - Referring to the join date of a user

Avy - Short for avatar. This is the small picture beside our posts.

QFT - Quoted for truth. This is used to agree with a post you have quoted. Posting "." or "this" is a similar way to do this.
*reported* - used to signify that a thread has been marked as spam/trolling/against the rules/posted in the incorrect forum. moderators then delete/move these threads
ROFL - rolling on the floor laughing
ROFLMAO - combination of rofl and lmao, sometimes with a photo of the Chinese dictator, Mao
Shens - Short for shenanigans, saying something is stupid or not true. "Pics or shens" says, "I don't believe you until you post pictures".

Shoop Da Whoop - an interent meme, which is a commonly used photoshop character.

PPP - posts per page. UG uses 20 (default) and 40. can be changed in the "options" menu of the control panel.

JK - just kidding.
Pups - short for "pickups" on a guitar.

Shoop Da Whoop - an interent meme, which is a commonly used photoshop character.
Noob - a person who is new to a forum/website.
TBH - to be honest.
Searchbar - No seriously, use it. That is why it is there.

morningedit: i'll try and list some that are more guitar related....

Trem - Usually is an abbreviation for "tremolo". It is a type of bridge on a guitar that will loosen the strings when the tremolo arm is depressed, thereby lowering the pitch. Also, some tremolo bridges can raise pitch (see FR)
FR - Stands for "Floyd Rose". Usually seen as OFR (Official Floyd Rose) and LFR (Licensed Floyd Rose). This type of tremolo bridge can raise, as well as lower, the noise-pitch of the instrument.
HT, SB - Hardtail. Also sometimes referred to as a Stopbar (SB). These types bridges can not bend pitch of the instrument (unless you know how to whammy without a whammy bar), and are most commonly seen on Les Pauls.
Whammy, Whammy Bar - another name for a tremolo arm.
Amp - A sound amplifier. See "Head" and "Combo"
Head - Amplifier Head. This is the unit that will receive the electrical signal from the guitar/bass, and amplify the sound. An amp head does not have speakers, and must be used in conjunction with a speaker cabinet.
Cab - Speaker cabinet. These are used to produce the actual sound you hear. Cabs can come in many different formats and sizes. A 1x12 contains one 12'' speaker, an 8x10 contains eight 10'' speakers. Must be used in conjunction with an amplifier (they will not produce sound on their own).
Combo - This is a unit that contains both an amplifier head and a speaker in a single enclosure. This means you can plug into a combo amp, and will get sound without any other piece of equipment.
Gibby - Short for Gibson, the guitar manufacturer.
LP - A Les Paul guitar. The body shape was invented, and popularized by guitar-maker Les Paul, and produced originally by Gibson.
Epi - Short for Epiphone, now a sister company to Gibson Guitars. They produce many licensed reproductions of famous Gibson guitars.
POS - Piece of sh*t. Typically associated with lower-end, beginner model guitars, such as Squier, First Act, etc...
Tele - Short for Fender Telecaster. This guitar is the brother to the Fender Esquire, the first production-model of Fender.
FX - abbrev. for "effects". Can come in the form of a single effect pedal(MXR Phae 90), multi-effects board (Boss GT-10), or a rack-mounted effects unit (TC electronics G Major). These effects are used to color a sound externally from the amplifier, however some amplifiers have effects processors built in.

Do you think the list should have terms related to playing techniques? such as tap/tapping, shred/shredding, hammer-on's and pull-off's with mini-definitions for each? i know when i first started playing, i was confused with what all those terms actually mean.

Some men just want to watch the world burn. And they work at Behringer.

I really appreciate the time you took on making this list for me, but I would like to keep it more general. The equipment forums have stickies explaining what all of the terms mean. (Or they should)

ALSO

inb4- In Before, which means that you first posted something like inn some kind of thread asking for examples. Eg.
THREAD NAME: Names for my band?
REPLIES: inb4 [commonly used name]

I don't understand what you mean by that, any chance you could link me to an example? Maybe I could word it differently.

TS: Anyone know of any weirdly-shaped guitars?

RE: inb4 wangcaster

TS: What song should I play at my brother's funeral?

RE: inb4 i cum blood

pretty much all of this could be figured out with a simple google or urbandictionary search. i think i'd rather encourage people to seek information for themselves than spoon feed them in this situation, so i won't be stickying this thread for now. threads asking for definitions of terms aren't made that frequently anyway.

A meme is basically an inside joke that spans a website or sometimes the entire internet.
