Hey guys I have a question. I was curious as to what the value of the bass that my school owns would be. It is a '70's Fender Jazz Bass. Almost mint condition. Natural finish, all of the original chrome hardware. Pickup and bridge covers.

Wait, an original 70's, or 70's Reissue? Cuz if it's an original it'll be worth a whole hell of a lot.

If its from the 70s, it will likely be worth a lot. But Fenders in the 70s were a bit shoddier than they were before or after about 79.

Well I know nothing about basses. But it has a pickup cover, and a bridge cover with the F on it. And the only time it is played is for the pep band during basketball games. Its a beauty. I was just curious because I plan on offering to play this year and if he has me play bass I kinda wanted to know the value of the piece of wood hanging off my shoulders

To be honest, it's probably not worth as much as you think.

Fender made a buttload of them and the CBS-era instruments have a bad reputation.

Does it have a 3 bolt neck plate?

$1,100 to $2,200, depending on the exact year and/or model.

Agree the 70s were not particularly good years for Fender.

I don't really have any way of getting them until the pep band season starts and they bring it out, unless I asked my director if I could take some pictures. Yes, it does have a 3 bolt neck plate. I took a good look at it last year after class one day. I'm not completely sure, but I THINK the model year is '74. Don't hold me to that though because I'm not postitive on it.

I know the reissues are about 350-500, but that isn't much help here...

just so there is no mis-understanding, a '74 Fender Jazz is still a very nice bass.
it's just not as collectable as earlier models. i would be proud to own, or play one.
maybe not Fenders best, but far from their worst.

tell them 500 they dont need to know the true value
