For the guitar/geek segment, (in particular if you happen love AND/OR hate GuitarHero), this may be interesting:

http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-7423282768248312140

LittleBigStar is unique in supporting real instruments, real tabulature and feature software synthesizing for creating real sound.

It's under development, but there is a community tech preview out.

Webpage is here: http://LittleBigStar.net

that's what i imagined guitar hero would be like when i first heard about it (before the first one came out)

i kinda hope this works out, though i won't pay money for a custom guitar designed to plug into an Xbox but not an amplifier.

i would if all you needed was a cable that transfered your guitar into an xbox or ps3

this is really pretty different from guitar pro, a bunch of people seem to utterly fail to realise this.

Yes, it's not perfect, and probably will never be. Automatic detecting notes, and in particular chords is really difficult. But its improving all the time, and a 50% solution may be enough for some.

I'm not trying to sell anything... I just thought it could have interest for some members over here. Perhaps somebody would even like to help developing the software.

And what's the deal on GuitarPro 5.2?

^On GuitarPro you can connect your guitar to the computer and show the notes that you are playing (instead of having to type them out).

But what differs is that LittleBigStar is a game and GuitarPro is...well not.

Plus on GuitarPro, if you play a note on a specific string it'll sometimes come up on a different string you played it on. It's a bit of a bug if you ask me.

Well, there's always more than one place to play the same note, so you can't really blame it.

Why would you use your guitar to play a game in which you use your guitar to play a song? You could just skip the middle-man altogether and, god forbid, play a song on your guitar.

How can you love and hate Guitar Hero?
Josh Homme writes the greatest lyrics EVAR:
"I wish we could get away
Drink wine and screw"

"Nicotine, valium, vicodin, marijuana, ecstasy, and alcohol
C-C-C-C-Cocaine!"

"I wanna lick you too much"

yeah, but their pitch correction algorithms aren't that great and it's not good with chords at all. Although now that melodyne is out that may change (melodyne is an awesome program if you do electronic music BTW)

I think the diea is that it teaches you to play a song by means of a game.

You do know that 90%* of GP owners got it from torrents, right?

There's probably a help section in the software, though.

*Accurate percentage based on years and years of research, obviously.

It's bloody well upside down.

thats a big +1. i was confused for the first minute or so of that vid, esp when the chords came. it sounded like a minor chord, but didn't look like one.....

That's way too hard for anyone to follow that at speed.. It's a nice idea, but will NOT catch on.

There is already a "discreete play mode", which simply stops and waits at every note/chord. Its ok for learning solos, at least if you are a complete novice like me.
Also, Im implementing a slow-down option for next release.
