UGH!

Okay y'all know how expensive gear can get. How can I explain this to my dad?

I was trying out a Mesa which, as you know are like $1000 New. My Dad asked, "It sounds good, how much is it?"

I checked the tag, "about a thousand"

Dad: "WHAT??!!??"

*EPIC FACEPALM*

I explained the difference between a $300 SS and a $1000 Tube.

"it's cause tubes use waaayy better components and the power supplies and transformers and everything are really good quality compared to the cheap stuff in ss."

To us that know, its night and day. So how can I explain it to him so that he doesnt flip out every time he sees a high price tag?

^ you cant just be a good son/daughter and brown nose a bit and he might buy it for you in some weeks or months.

where are you getting a 1000$ dollar new Mesa? I want in.

Explain to your dad that its your money and that you should be able to spend it as you like. If its not your money then you should probably not complain.
Sig What?

I don't know how dedicated you are to playing, but make it clear to your dad. Parents hate spending money on things their kids give up after a couple of months. If you can convince your dad that playing guitar is a long-time thing, then he'll probably be more willing to spend more money.

Why is he buying you an amp? You're old enough to save your own money for toys. Don't be a vag. Contribute your own cash and then you can get whatever you feel is worth the money.... and.... buy a used one. I got mine for 600 :p

No, I tried it, just to try. I've already got an SG and a Casino (both Epiphone's). It's not that I want it, if I did, I'd just save my money.

It's just that he cant get over how expensive stuff is, where as I take it at face value.

How can I help him get over the fact that it is what it is?

(We're farmers, so money is always tight, its part of being a farmer)

I guess I could tell him, "Amps are expensive just the same as tractors cost a $100,000."

Oh alright. Well amps are like anything that ranges a lot in price. Those that appreciate subtle changes in tone are willing to pay A LOT more than those who don't. He'd have to actually play to really get it. Maybe you should show him some Soldano, Engl, or better yet boutique amps costing 5K and up. Then it may be more clear that Mesas aren't such a bad deal.

what I told my parents is that going from SS to Tube (sound quality wise) is the equivalent of going from standard definition to high definition (video quality wise)

thats my 2 cents

but u may want to consider whether or not you really need a half stack (if you are somehow buying a mesa head for $1k)

More like going from Black and white to colour vision.

Or, from a tine 18" to a 45" wide screen.

If your SG is a G400, I'll give you 400 for both.

That'll put you closer to your mesa goal

If you buy your own stuff why does it matter what Daddy and Mommy think of the price tag?

Also, this.

And Tube is not always better than SS. It's the quality of the instrument (yes, amplifiers are instruments).

Name, place of manufacture, materials, etc. all come into play when pricing amps.

Tube would be the analog 18", btw.

For the whol "it's your own money thing," some parents don't want their kids to spend that much money on something they see as being no different from the previous one. My parents were hesitant on letting me buy my Classic 30. I laughed and told them "wait till I can afford really good amps. This is nothing. Few years from now, I'll hopefully be dropping over 2000 on the amp alone."
They got the message and said ok.
