Just a thought. I was in my college classes to day and i was wondering why. The students and many of the teachers were elating all over themselves about how great/perfect socialism is. So why does everyone (well mostly young people like me) get a hard-on over communism? Wasn't that shit frowned upon 30-40 years ago?
#4
Because they have no clue what it really is about, they just "heard about it from somewheres".
Dear God, do you actually answer prayers?

Yes, but only in a way indistinguishable from random luck or the result of your own efforts.

Maybe because its a viable alternative to capitalism and people are just starting to catch on to that fact?

It's the 'in' thing to support.

Don't worry, everyone will forget all about it when they realize how cool Nazism and Fascism are!
#9
The problem is all those "communist" societies weren't really communist.
Either people like it because they want to be left-wing, or because they know real communism would be a Utopia-dull as fuck, but prosperous and peaceful.

"viable to capitalism". why has it not worked all the times it's been tried, while our capitalist systems are doing pretty well?

The vast majority aye.
Some of us do have a clue. It's a nice idea, but it'll never work.

Because the concept of it is pretty much awesome, but unfortunately it never works as expected.

I don't like commnism, nor any other form of government for that matter.

Apparently it's cool to like communism now.

If you're referring to the teenage popularity of Communism, this is why.

However, I do know one guy who is convinced that Communism is the way. He has lectured to me for about 30 minutes before on how Communism could be the perfect system of government if implimented effectively to a willing population of people.

His arguments made a lot of sense but weren't very realistic. It was all based on the idea that a whole population would willingly accept Communism, which would never happen.

It's about as viable to capitalism as shit is a viable alternative to face cream.

Socialism can work (if done right) if its done right, communism can't. Ever.

End of story.

What the hell since when was it cool to like communism?
I seriously don't see where you got that from. Most teenagers I know don't even know what communism is.

Pretty well compared to what? People have no perspective.

You can't compare the success of a well-developed capitalist country to an underdeveloped communist country and target the difference in ideology as the catalyst for the "success". The countries that are communist have lagged behind in their development since the days of the plague.

yes, but of course capitalism isn't really viable either, as it relies on infinite sustainable growth.

Precedent doesn't always define what will happen in the future. Many of the "communist" nations that failed either were in reality socialist (see South America, during Vietnam War) or had corrupt leaders (uhh Soviet Union?).

Now, this doesn't mean that its viable, I'm just pointing out that using past examples to shoot down new ideas isn't logical.

The capitalist system does work well for Americans most of the time, but it also has its side effects. These include the disparity in wealth we create between us and the rest of the world, the lack of consideration and support for poorer people and the cyclical downturns that occur (we're in one right now).

To every other economic system ever implemented in history...I'd say that's a pretty fair perspective.

Just before this thread descends into flaming Russia and China...

Russia + China =/= Socialist
Russia + China =/= Communist

Communist State = impossible (its a complete contradiction)

And if you really don't understand that you really shouldn't be posting in this thread

True communism has never existed in the world, the theory has just been reprented in literature by Karl Marx. No nation has ever reached the state of "True Communism", although various places around the world has their governement working under the names of Communism and Socialism (which are two totally different things- one is very right wing, one is very left wing).
