Ok, well the other thread has inspired me to write this. School I'm pretty sure failed me. I think I may have an idea between them but I'm also pretty sure I'm very wrong. Basically I think the difference is socialism is everyone shares stuff and communism is the government owns everything. Could someone clarify this for me?

Communism = economic idea
Socialism = political idea

Let it sink in.

Communism is more radical. Both want government intervention in the economic system. Socialists are democrats, which Communists get their way through revolution.

Right FFS...

Communism - stateless/classless society
Socialism - transistitory period towards communism

I cannot make it simpler than that

This should put this to rest once and for all (PS: get captaincrunk to read this):

"Socialism refers to a broad set of economic theories of social organization advocating state or collective ownership and administration of the means of production and distribution of goods, and the creation of an egalitarian society.[1][2] Modern socialism originated in the late nineteenth-century working class political movement. Karl Marx posited that socialism would be achieved via class struggle and a proletarian revolution which represents the transitional stage between capitalism and communism"

"Communism is a socioeconomic structure and political ideology that promotes the establishment of an egalitarian, classless society based on common ownership of the means of production and property in general.[1][2][3] According to Marxism, communism is the final stage in human society which has evolved into a classless, stateless society"

End of discussion

Hence the quote marks. Also for once, wikipedia is actually fairly reliable on the matter.

Socialism is the path you have to take for a few generations to get to Communism (according to Marx).

right, socialism is a step to true communism, and the USSR was actually Socialist (just like the name says). They never made it to a complete state of communism.

Yeah, they don't arrest/ticket hobos because they can't pay the fines. Then they hang out in the jail all day eating free food. There's no point.

You can have a socialist government and still vote...

I'm probably wrong but..

Communism= no property, everything is collectively owned by everyone

Socialism= a leftist government, with most things privatized (energy, education, health etc) but you can still own property. Communism is a form of socialism but most socialist countries do go as far as to denounce the concept of property.

Insert this chart into the OP

Capitalism-Completely free trade, NO government intervention period.

Communism-Everything is controlled by the government, no free trade or anything of the sort.

Socialism-Midpoint. Many elements of capitalism as far as the market is concerned, but most things like education and health care are provided for free.

Capitalism----------------|----------------Socialism---|--------------------------------Communism

A typical western government will fall somewhere between these two points on the line

Mmm no. Reread:

""Communism is a socioeconomic structure and political ideology that promotes the establishment of an egalitarian, classless society based on common ownership of the means of production and property in general.[1][2][3] According to Marxism, communism is the final stage in human society which has evolved into a classless, stateless society""

There is no government.

Dude don't worry about it. I grew up in a religious community where everyone accepts these sort of misconceptions and I never knew the difference until I started to read about these things myself. Asking these sort of fundamental questions is the best thing you can do

No problem. And yeah I can empathise. It gets a lot better at Uni - at least some of the lecturers actually know what they are talking about.
