Anyone ever see/hear of a floating tremolo that, when depressed, can be locked at a half-tone, or a full step down? It would make downtuning easier, but the loss of tension would probably make it impossible.

That does sound pretty ludicrous.

If you dive it, then locked when it's in the dive-position, it would make the strings totally hard to play from loss of tension. It seems like one of the more impractical ways to detune, and I think it's even more a waste of time than electronic detuning as seen in the case of the VG strat.

I wouldn't get your hopes up on seeing one of these "triple locking trems" any time soon.

Yeah, I figured it wouldn't work. But you wouldn't be able to accidentally lock it in as dived. There'd be some sort of post with notches in it that the tremolo bar could slip into and stay there. Then, you lift it up, or push some sort of switch, the post drops, the bar goes back to standard.
I know it wont work, but it'd be pretty cool.

Well, after experimenting a bit, i find that the string tension decreases at different rates...so...yeah. I dont think it would work.

The advantages of this system, though, is that you don't need to buy a separate pedal that needs power/etc., and that takes up space on your board.

As said the strings all change pitch at different rates, for example if you push down the bar so that your low E is down a whole step all the other strings will not have gone down with it. It really couldn't work.

yeah, the trans-trem 3 should be able to fit conventional guitars. they arent offered for sale yet but they would prolly go for 500-1000 bucks based on TT2 prices.

Just google Steinberger, or Trans-Trem. Also check out "Summer Nights" by Van Halen from the album 5150 released in 1986. This was the first track (I think) where Eddie used a Steinberger and the Trans-Trem as sort of capo to switch between keys.
