Ok my bud has $500 and needs a new bass. He plays mainly pop punk and '00s alternative.
Any suggestions? Price is flexible. Thanks!

For Pop punk and Alt I'd check out a Fender P-Bass, what amp does your friend have?

you can't really beat a fender jazz or precision, but they are different in many important ways. if he's more into pop punk, he might go for a P bass, but IMO, jazzes work just as well.

p-bass most would say but the jazz could work well too

Ok first of all thanks. I told him about the Fenders and he likes them. He asked what would be an easy description to both the sound and feel of each bass, and we live really far away from a music store so try to be as descriptive as possible!

The Fender P-Bass is a heavy thick tone, if you listen to any pop-punk band, there is a very very high chance they are using a P-Bass.

If I had 500, I'd buy a peavey grind.

Is there such a thing as a heavy riff with out chugging on the e string?

Aren't there any people who live nearby with some basses? Like you could try out their basses and see if you like them and then base buying on it. Or just take a trip down the shop one day and try out everything that's within price range, to make sure your $500 isn't being wasted on something that you don't like.
Gear:

Musicman SUB 5
Ibanez SRX305
Ibanez GSR200
Ashdown MAG300 C115
Ashdown MAG 210 cab

Soon a Fender Deluxe Jazz V & an LTD 206
