So I have been interested in books that take a nihilistic approach for a while, and I wanted to read A Clockwork Orange. I bought the book, then I put on the counter, and my stepdad sees it and is like "WHY IS THIS BOOK HERE????" I tried to just kindly explain the book looked interesting and I wanted to read it, then he tells my mom how the movie is the worst thing ever, and my mom gets on Wikipedia, reads about it, then is screaming at me and throws the book away. Is this justified? What should I do? I am probably just going to go get the book again and read it just because they hate it so bad.

I am 17 btw.

It's a great book. You should tell your parents to try and be open minded for a change.

I haven't yet read it, but I'm about to! But on principle I think that's not a very good approach to things tbh. Am also 17, but parents don't really care what I read. Surely you should be allowed to make your own opinions on these things, and to choose what you read for yourself?! Strikes me as over-reacting, it's notorious, and for good reason, but I think that if people looked at it now, in this context where violence as a whole has become more of an everyday thing (e.g violent video games, etc.) then it wouldn't be so shocking. Seen the film, wasn't too freaked. Have either of them read it? And in a way, it just empowers the book in several ways, do they really think that a book is going to be enough to completely corrupt you? Read it anyway! Or maybe even suggest that they read it.

Sorry, rant over!

Agreed, they are super evangelical Christians and can't understand literature like this and it's place in the world, they take everything in it 100% literally, like if I read this book, I will turn out to be the kid in the story.

You're 17. You're old enough to see the movie on your own. Read the damn book.

Start crying and yell "you're not my REAL dad" at your step dad and blame your mom for everything. She'll pick the book up for you (or maybe not, but give it a go).

I'm wondering if I should ruin the ending for you. I guarantee the actual meaning of the book and what your parents think the meaning is, are entirely different.

There is a name for people who place control over someone's free opinion.
These are the kinds of examples that give Evangelical Christians bad names, and they wonder why!?
You shouldn't be made to avoid certain novels, for that is the life and soul of novel reading: the way you can pick something up and get lost in it, disappear into the pages and find something powerful within it.
To use the excuse of religion is childish of your parents.
They can't smother your literary reading forever.

I think every 17 year old should read it so they'll live a life of Anarchy and care-lessness of the human mind and just rape and murder anyone they want and get it away with it cuz that's Anarchy and Chaos

FOOKING P00NX!!!!

nah just kidding

the reason why you're parents won't led you read it, is because the book is FULL of how Government (and Society in general) use Ironic ways to deal with things. Using violence to show how violence is bad, things like that.

For example, Alex is a crazy ****ing moron psycho rapist murderer, but how does the Government take care of this??? How can someone or something take care of such an issue without going too far? So they use the same exact things he did to brainwash the shit out of him, in hope he will return to civilization as a good ol' chap.

The issues expressed in this book are so ****ing complexed and advanced, that society just wants it to go away really.

Like how they are not letting you read that book because it is BAD and ****ed up and horrible.

I think they should let you read that book, to show you that you have to make some unfortunate sacrifices in life.
I love all forms of Rock 'n' Roll, past and NOT present

Try reading L'Etranger (The Stranger) by Albert Camus and Catch-22 by Joesph Heller. They're both really good, and they sound up your alley. As for your problem, just get another copy, and don't tell your parents about it or leave it laying around.

Just tell them to get ****ed and buy it again. Or you could go and throw out their favorite books and tell them its all trash.

but you're parents are morons. Get the movie just to piss them off!
