Hey... I have a burning question
What was the very first band to ever use screaming/growling vocals like many of the modern metal bands?
Is this info even known?
Thanks

I don't know about screaming, but I think Possessed is credited with using one of the first ever death metal "grunts."

a good friend of mine might know, his name is Google, his brother Yahoo might know too
My Gear:
Epiphone Classic Les Paul
Ibanez JS1000 w/ Seymour Duncan Jazz and Pearly Gates
Alverez Acoustic
Fender Hot Rod Deluxe

The first death-like vocals in music are widely believed to be either the song 'Boris The Spider' by The Who, or 'Tubular Bells' by Mike Oldfield
#8
Possessed was the first to use them exclusively i believe, not sure about the first appearance of these vocals though

Posessed was the first Death Metal band, so I'd assume they were the first to growl

screaming you could say The Doors or Iggy And The Stooges, it obviously didn't happen too much, but they both did

First time listening to Possessed, and they sound a lot like Slayer.

my vote goes to AC/DC. Brian Johnson is the first screamer vocalist I know of.

To all the people who are saying ACDC, The Who, and The Doors.

Kam Lee from Mantis. Jeff didn't do vocals for Possessed at first and Death By Metal came out before Death Metal.

The Witching Metal demo came out in 1982. As harsh as Kam Lee but black metal instead of death metal.

Mmm, I don't have any of Sodom's demos. Worth checking out?

for Screaming like modern days, you should probably try some of the really old Punk, or Hardcore Punk

after all, Screaming in the modern sense DID start in Hardcore Punk

No. Listen to the first two Slayer records, then tell me that Possessed are better. Possessed made some amazing records, but they do not compare to Show No Mercy.

You need to fix that.

IMO Posessed's one godly album>Slayer's 3 good ones

plus, Posessed wins for having Larry LaLonde who later went on to guitar it up for Primus

Larry's a twat. He disowns Possessed.

let me rephrase:
Dark Angel is the only thrash band i consistently listen too, but i'll still throw on Sarcofago, Sodom, Blood Feast, Witches Hammer, etc. and some prog/tech thrash like Coroner, Mekong Delta, and Artillery
not a lot of thrash sticks with me though

i would've disowned Possessed to be with the gods that are Brain and Les

and the fact that he disowned them doesn't matter, he's still a godlike guitarist

Not really. He doesn't disown them to be with Primus. He's just embarrassed.
