If you like it, go ahead. Valvekings can most definitely do metal with a boost of some sort and a little time eq-ing properly.

Remember, try it first.

In most cases, you'd be better off going with a combo. It'll be just as loud, but much cheaper. I never have to turn my 40W tube combo past 3 to get over drums, to be a gigging level.

You may be able to find these amps on the used market (check craigslist.org):
A Peavey XXX - see them go for under 700
A Marshall JCM900 seen 'em go for under 700

And then use the rest of your cash to buy a good 2x12" cab, like one from Avatarspeakers.com.

Otherwise, I'd go for:
used Mesa Mark III combo
B-52 AT-112
Randall RG50TC
used Mesa F-30
used Mesa F-50
used Laney GH50L (halfstack near me actually going for 750, IIRC)
among others.

why a half stack...? are you gigging, or do you just want a stack for the 'cool factor'

Because that's the only reason why someone would get a halfstack

lrn2bassresponse.

But you can get away with 2x12 and it's probably a better idea to get a good 2x12 than a mediocre 4x12.

Heads are usually cheaper than combos, so if you end up owning more than one head it can be cheaper in the long run.

Speakers can always be replaced in cabs.

Also, B-52 AT100, its probably the best in your price range. I own one, and so does my best friend and we both love our stacks.

bit o both...a good combo would cut it now but i think i might as well take the step b4 i need to so i dont have to put out 500 now and another 1500 later

2x12's cabs are halfstcks too!

If you're going to play metal, get a 2x12.
