I have to find a topic for my final essay/term project for my Western Civilization class. For this project, my teacher is letting us extend beyond the walls of 'western' civ, and we can pick any topic from any time between the ancient world (say, as far back as Mesopotamia), and today, however I would find something after 1900 a lot more interesting.

To fit my interests, I want to do my project on something about rebellion, where one or many people or groups rebel against what held them back. It doesn't matter whether they succeeded or not, as long as it had a significant historical impact.

So far I've thought of the Berlin wall; I don't know much about it though. My friend has also suggested the inquisition, which although isn't exactly along the lines of rebellion, it's still an interesting topic.

So please suggest ideas.

Tiananmen Square

First thing that came to mind.

I'm not really good at thinking of big protests, though. =/
