I currently have a crappy amp that comes with this - http://www.guitarcenter.com/Squier-by-Fender-Stop-Dreaming--Start-Playing-Affinity-Strat-HSS-with-Bullet-150-DSP-Amp-512576-i1174771.gc

I was planning to buy an OD pedal but people here told me the truth and told me to buy a better amp instead. Im willing to spend like... $210-$250... a cheap tube combo would be nice So please give me your thoughts and ideas

Thanks

Maybe an Epi Valve Junior and an OD pedal to go with it?????
If you're willing to go used you could probably find the amp for about $100,
that'll leave you with plenty of cash for a good OD.

What music are you playing? Are you gigging? Can you go used?
I don't give a shit if you listen to me or not

New?

Some other options would be:

Fender Champ 600 for blues, rock. $199. Money left for OD
Peavey Vypyr 30 for heavier rock and metal. $175. no OD or pedals
Roland Cube 30 is $245, Cube 20 is $175. no OD or pedals
Fendor VibroChamp for blues, rock $199 i think, no OD or pedals

Used - you never know but worth a look.

Wow thanks man - great info. im looking for a tube/ss (preferably tube) with simple 3 band EQ, volume, gain (are there gain controls for tube amps? or do you just push the tube...?), and AT LEAST REVERB.

Here is some stuff in Canadian $$. The NEW stuff I listed was in US. Again, the Fender's will struggle with the metal stuff you want to do. Vypyrs seem to pack a lot of features, but I'm not sure if they are available up there. Love the city of Toronto btw!

Roland MicroCube $225
http://toronto.en.craigslist.ca/tor/msg/913073342.html

Vibrochamp and cab $450 (not sure if they would split up)
http://toronto.en.craigslist.ca/tor/msg/913043078.html

Regent tube amp $250 (don't know much about it but looks interesting)
http://toronto.en.craigslist.ca/tor/msg/912989618.html

Fender Pro Jr $300 (a little over bud.)
http://toronto.en.craigslist.ca/yrk/msg/912237542.html

Peavey Transtube 80w $180
http://toronto.en.craigslist.ca/mss/msg/911066467.html

311ZOSOVHJH - your amazing
Is it cheaper to buy a cheap tube amp without the eq and an eq pedal or to just buy a tube amp with the eq?
Thanks for the list by the way
If i could find a vypyr, would that be the best choice?

give me a sec...is your 250 in canadian dollars?

yes, some amps have built in EQs but you will be tough to get all the things you want on your budget - but we'll see

yeah canadian lolz

There are some inexpensive all tube amps that have built in EQs. Like a Crate V18. That would fit your budget too if you can find one. The lowest cost EQ pedal that's worth anything imo is the Danelectro Fish n Chips 7 band EQ for $40. My amp has an EQ too, but it is nothing compared to the 7 band EQ pedal that I now run.

I guess what I'm saying is, don't get too hung up on this aspect.

As far as the Vypyrs, I've played two of them now, the 15 and 75, and they seem like good amps. A little confusing at first but there are tons of options. Won't have that 'tube' sound like the VibroChamp or Champ 600 but very passable as starter amp or practice amp. This along with the Roland Cubes, are solid state amps and not tube amps but they are great at what they do and both have built in 3 band EQs.

For some reason, i've heard that the crates are terrible amps? Right now im leaning to the cubes. tried a 20x just today and i was impressed with all the amp models . has way more features than my crappy fender.

The Crate solid state amps were pretty bad and gave the company a bad name. They are now owned by the same company that owns Blackheart amps and the word on the street is that Crate is selling off remaining inventory of the 'V' series to make way for the Blackheart lines. I don't think the Crate V amps are terrible and they certainly are a good value at their current prices.

That said, the Roland Cubes are pretty amazing for size and price. I was impressed too when I played a Cube 30 and Microcube the other day. I'd say go for it as long as it has the COSM technology.

Im beginning to wonder why i should buy a tube amp... SS's really sound bad compared to tube amps?

Im looking at ...
Crate V 18w for early overdrive. http://guitars.musiciansfriend.com/product/Crate-V-Series-V18212-18W-2x12-Tube-Guitar-Combo-Amp?sku=487055

the cube http://guitars.musiciansfriend.com/product/Roland-Cube-20X-Amp-With-COSM?sku=487031

have you ever tried vox and orange amps?
#18
Try both and see what you like. If you're mainly playing metal at low volumes the cube should suit you better, if your more into rock and you have a chance to crank you amp a bit the crate should be better.

about how loud would you need to turn the volume up to for the crate v to start to break up?
Would regular OD pedals sound better on the cube or the crate?
#24
alright... and the cube has some decent distortion for me right? like brit crunch, rock, metal, blues and stuff?

lol i was staring at your name for a while and i think i understand some of it...

lol thanks. whats ska? and yah ill check them out, can you tell me one of their good songs?

great... hey zoso (ill call you that if you want) thanks for all your help. how long have you been playing? your a guitar expert
#27
^ha....thanks man, but i'm not really. I'm just a fast learner. I've been playing for a couple of years but didn't get serious until I came here to UG looking for Tabs back in February.

I don't know if I would characterize 311 as ska but ska is like Incubus, Bob Marley, Led Zeppelin's 'Dancing Days', Sublime, No Doubt, and maybe some Chili Peppers all rolled into one big fatty. Something like that.

Here's some stuff to search youtube on:
311 heavier - Beautiful Disaster, Galaxy, The Continous Life off the album Transistor.
311 early days - Welcome, Visit, Paradise, Hydroponic, My Stoney Baby off the album Music.
other hits include Down, F.T.B.S, Amber, Stealing Happy Hours, and anything off the album Grassroots.

i see... i started in march break, well i used to play drums and i had an old acoustic lying around. my new music teacher at school made drums so boring that i never looked at a guitar the same way again. i got my electric in march break.

mmm... ill have to do some research on ska but yeah...

wow seems like you really love this band eh?
#29
for me...(life term)...they are up there with zeppelin, van halen, metallica, peppers as far as all time favs.

i love the drums...to bad you had a bad experience or whatever. I used to have a drum clip in my profile...maybe i should put it back up. It was on a $50 starter kit so it kinda sucked.

also, what do you think about some of the second hand gear i linked you too? What is your gut reaction now amp wise? Cube?
#30
wow must be pretty good

lol you must have banged the hell out of that thing

yeah the cube 20x. about second hand gear... my parents arent to cool with that so yeah..
imma have to buy new (dont know if thats good or bad lol)
