I like the sound i get but why not make it a bit better when its possible? Its a ENGL Screamer 50

Was thinking of a JJ / Tesla 6L6GC Matched pair for power and

3 x JJ / Tesla ECC83s / 12AX7 * Testing : Low Noise and Microphonics (+$4.00)
1x JJ / Tesla ECC83s / 12AX7 * Testing : Matched+Balanced Triodes (+$4.00)

Do you think it will be good to go with all JJ ?

This combination will give me a deeper low end , more natural and less harsh mids and smoother highs , and since the amp is pretty bright it will make it a bit darker

Should i go with the hi-gain versions of the preamps or is these good enough?

Do i have to bias the amp if i change tubes? I dont know how to do that :P

Ive read that one of the preamp tubes should be balanced for the phase inverter? But what is the phase inverter? And in which spot should that tube be in?

Personally, I wouldn't stick with one brand, but if it sounds good, it sounds good right?

I'm guessing you're throwing the Balanced 12AX7 in the Phase Inverter?

I really don't like all JJs in the preamp, but you might enjoy it.

I've had tube amps for a while now, but never actually had any go down on me

maybe you're not saying the right things? an amp likes to know you care.

Could you give some examples of better combinations? I dont have much experience with different tube brands

imo JJ ECC83s-->Tungsol 12AX7--->JJ ECC83s-->JAN 12AT7 Balanced Triodes in that order for the preamp

and poweramp = JJ 6L6GC

All imo, should give you a darker tone with a nice bit of crunch and hi gain sizzle.

And the JJ power tubes really open up your tone and give a very nice UMPH and thumping to your playing.

Phase inverter is usually the last tube in the preamp. It splits the signal into 2 phases, and sends it to the power amp, which amplifies the phases independantly. a 12ax7/12at7/12au7/12ay7/ecc83/ecc81/5751 contains 2 internal triodes. When you balance them, it basically means that they operate very similarly in terms of gain, capacitance, and transconductence (im not 100% sure about this). 12at7 is generally better for Pi slot because although it has less gain than a 12ax7 (which is almost irrelevant for PI), but it has 6 times the transconductence. this means more output to the poweramp and more dynamics. also it means that it takes more input to the PI to make it start breaking down and distorting (generally not good for pi)

thanks for the info about phase inverter

tungsol ive heard is a good brand, but JAN ive never heard about, what is it that make you choose that one as the phase inverter?

it's a NOS tube with military specs. the options for 12at7 are considerably smaller than 12ax7s. the JAN in my experience have provided the greatest dyanamic response and really hold up well when you push the tubes hard. they also last a very long time.

Yeah, that's it. Matched is for a set of 2 or more. dont bother with preamp tubes. it's power amp tubes you want to match so they dissipate at the same point. Just get balanced
