stupid question but is a flat and g sharp the same?

Same pitch yes. Different names for different uses.

EDIT: They are "enharmonic".

To clarify, you mean 'A' sharp and 'G' flat, correct? First time I read it I saw it as a really weird way of asking "is a g flat and g sharp the same note?"

But yes, 'A' sharp and 'G' flat is the same note.
