Ok seeing as today is Remembrance Day, we had a 2 minutes silence at this thing I went to

It got me thinking about how at some football matches these days, they have a minutes applause instead of a minutes silence

Do you ever think they could replace the minutes silence on remembrance day with a minutes applause?

And which do you prefer?

The only make it a minutes applause at football so the opposition fans / dickheads don't ruin the silence. Otherwise it would stay as silence as it should be.
#3
A minutes silence easily beats a minutes worth of applause for such an occasion because, to me at least, it symbolises the silence when the guns stopped firing.

A minutes silence is much more symbolic and respectful.
Keep it as silence.
I hope it doesn't seem, like I'm young, foolish, and green.
Let me in for a minute, you're not my life but I want you in it

This

Sadly, some football fans are absolute wankers. Although, to be fair, the vast majority observe silences like they should

How about a minute's fapping?

Silence, definitely. Heroism is to be applauded, but War is not. Silence both pays respect to the honoured dead whilst reminding us to always be introspective.

Applause is not solemn. Silence is. Therefore, silence is more appropriate.

The guys in my fine art studio seemed to mistake '2 minutes silence' for 'musical statues'. They looked stupid, and fell over when the time was up.

And it should not be applause, because war is terrible, whichever side you're on.

Silence is more symbolic, and in a public place, its eerie. Last year I was in London, near Big Ben when it rang for 11am and everyone stopped walking/talking and it was a bit surreal.

I vote silence.

on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918, the troops on the western front ceased fighting, as the armistice was signed. silence symbolises the stopping of the incredible level of noise on the battlefield. a thunderous applause would be more like the fighting. so therefore i disagree with the clapping as a replacement. but if silence is undoable in a football stadium, then at least the respect is there.

Silence, but in saying that I totally forgot it was rememberance day yesterday! oh well I'll make up for it on ANZAC day

Dude I got these strings the other day that couldn't be tuned to higher than 4 octaves below middle C then I realized that they were shoelaces and they weren't making any sound at all.

horribly, and I'm not proud of this, this is how I spent today's minute's silence. I was yet to surface from my bed and was not paying attention to time, but I realised after I'd finished what I'd done.

I say a minutes silence is better. Though nowadays most people (or at least 95% percent of my school's population) can't keep their mouths shut for one second, much less one minute.

The 2 minute silence is to commemorate those who died and fought for us in the war. Including all the innocent people who died. How would applauding innocent people who died be respectful?

applause at football match.. silence though is more respectful in public life.. and also I forgot to do it today.. in free period we talked right through it.. I felt quite shit.

"You Ugly git!" - That girl in the restaurant

"You Were a Mistake!" - Mum

I had frees too. But in the room we were sitting in, the staff that serve the food told us to all be quiet. Typically, someone farted. There were a few giggles.

Silence.

for two reaons.

1 - It symbolises when the guns stopped firing
2 - It shows up the dickheads who marr the silence

although at football games maybe appluase is better...then again maybe not
