Hey, so my band just got a regular gig at a local ice cream shop, and we're expected to fill up around 2 hours every night. The problem is, we only have about 40 minutes of original material that we can play at an acoustic setting. So we've decided to fill up our time slot with covers galore until we write enough stuff on our own, and we need to learn these songs fast. We have a list of songs that we want to do, but we're having trouble managing everything... remembering the parts and memorizing the lyrics and whatnot. Any advice or experience on how to speed up the process?

Simple easy songs, and Practice practice practice. My band can nail down a cover in one night if we work hard enough, so that's it really.

To remember lyrics, try writing them down over and over again. Then after you get good at that, try to talk through them. Finally sing em, and if you forget them during practice, go back and write again. Make sure understand them and they make sense to you too, thats really important.

Or pull a Garth Brooks...

On his live from Central Park DVD, he taped the lyrics to American Pie to his guitar when he sang it along with Don McLean.

Just practice, you can write down the lyrics alot but you wont memorize them if you don't speak them.. it is like rehearsing lines for a play. Reading from the script wont help you to memorize how to say them if you dont take time to do it.

Break the song in chunks - dont do the whole thing at once.. maybe a verse a couple times then verse chorus, then verse chorus verse and so on.

Guitar parts shouldn't be too hard to memorize unless theres a really big solo in there. But still practicing is best way to nail it.
