So im in the process for taking my ASVAB test. I take it next tuesday, and once i take it, i am then able to sign on.

I am fully interested in the NG because it is a very easy and laid back service to join.

The question I have, is that I am guaranteed a $20k sign on bonus. But when do i recieve this bonus.

Is it given to me in monthly installments for the next some odd years.
Do i get it after I complete my basic training?
or is it after ive been with them for a certain amount of years, or after my contract is up.

i dont know. i would get ahold of my recruiter to ask her this, but im gonna see her next week anyway so im not too worried about it.
oh and also, if your going to reply with "the national guard is gay, your a faggot" then dont reply. i really only want replies that are answering my question.

actually, go ahead and reply with things like that, thats how my thread stays up longer.

I've heard you get part of the bonus up front, and then it's spread out over the next paychecks. I never really got a straight answer when I was looking at the NG.
Also, be careful thinking it's easy and laid back. NG units get deployed to Iraq all the time. And do a good job on your ASVAB so you can actually have some job options that'll be useful. Any job where you get a security clearance is very valuable.
Anyway, good luck to ya! I'd recommend you look at the other branches first (especially the Navy) before making up your mind. And I only say Navy cus I'm joining! I'm shipping out to Basic on December 14th!
Anyway, good luck man!

well ya. but see im only a senior in high school. And i only have to serve a 6 year contract. But while im in school, they wont pull me out to send me somewhere. Which means that I have this one year left, and then I have 4 years of college. Thats 5 years right there. So i basically only have 1 year of active duty to fullfill.

And since im in school, the only thing im required to do is to go to a 2 day long drill camp once a weekend a month. so its pretty decent.

a year in high school won't count for those 6 years (as far as i know)

and seriously, study your ass off for the ASVAB. my friend's brother scored high enough to get a job offer from the CIA, so my friend was looking to beat that score. he took the ASVAB and maxxed his score on 7 sections! he's already getting looks from NASA, so i'm hoping to see my friend go to space. one of the jobs he's looking at is Satellite Comm. Specialist.

oh ok. if i remember correctly, the second i sign the paper is when it starts ticking away. i may be wrong. ill have to check with my recruiter.

Bonus used to be paid after completion of AIT. But that was a long time ago. Don't know if it's the same or not now. Call your recruiter.

I took the ASVAB scored a 97 (Almost perfect) and in May I go off into the most lucrative enlisted job in the military. So yea, do good on the ASVAB and it'll pay off.

Enlistment bonus is paid after all your schooling. Which includes basic and any sort of A or B school.

I don't know much about the NG at all, but I'd go NAVY if you can. I haven't heard of Iraq or Afghanistan having a competent naval force. Guys in the NG get shipped to Iraq all the time, guys in the Navy get to see the world on a crazy ship.

I does, but you're not officially in the military until you get a paycheck from the military. No matter what your recruiter says they can not force you to go to bootcamp. They can threaten you with jail, but not one person has gone in the past 26 years from any branch of the military.

Think of DEP as the last chance to make up your mind

The above link is to a 17 minute video. Watch this. I feel it is very, very relevant to you. It's absolutely phenominal.

Edit: Whilst not very widespread, the full War Tapes can be downloaded on certain websites.

I believe you get a portion of it upfront but they definitely won't give it to you all upfront. And if you get discharged before your 4 years or however long you're obligated to serve, you have to pay it all back.

I was really considering joing the NG, but I dunno. They pay for like half college I believe and if you get a really good score you get paid more money. I got a 41 on mine and they were after me for a while. Until I told them that I just had heart surgery and the recruiter hasn't really been after me since then. But yeah for me to get money they said I had to be able to do these many sit ups, run for so many miles, and so on and so on. But I do think you get money after your basic training. I think its only for 6-9 weeks. The pay check looked pretty good too.

Hell yes man!
Plus the jobs are great! I'm doing Mass Communications, which is a mix of Photography, Journalism and graphic arts. The Navy also gives you more control over where you get stationed and what you do while you're in.

The way it works in Active Duty is, the sign-on bonus is for certain jobs. You get paid 1/3 of it when you complete BCT and AIT, then monthly installments after that. I'm not completely sure for ARNG.

^I thought it was 1/2 out of basic, the rest in installments.

EDIT: To crackhutch.

That's what I heard too. Of course, the jobs that actually get you a bonus are jobs like Infantry or a Janitorial job. I'd recommend a job with real-world applications and good training. It'll pay off later, trust me!

NG is a bad idea...

But yes, its 20k up front, cold cash. Its not like you can back out.

You really are signing away your rights by doing this, so think twice

From what I hear, the cryptological linguist job in the Air Force has a pretty nice bonus.
