Hi.

I am doing an essay, and i am analyzing a source. Its an account for the Piedmontese uprising against the Austrians in 1848. So basically the topic of Italian Unification.

However my point of confusion, is that the account is from a socialist soldier who fought for the Piedmontese. Would he be biased against the Monarch Charles Albert (who is the leader of Piedmont) or does it not really matter.

Quick history lesson: everyone is biased. And if he's a socialist, there's a 99.9999% chance he won't like any monarch. but, I don't know anything about that specific historical situation.

Hmmmm, yeah well thats what I thoughts, its just that Charles Albert, was quite liberal, and allowed a constitution.

To all the people QQing over me not using Google, if you can find me a page, where it tells me whether an unknown Socialist Piedmontese soldier, held bias against the liberal monarch Charles Albert then they get a blowie. I don't think there is a right or wrong, for this i just wanted some opinions, because I am undecided.

It does depend on what he said. Just do what you should do for every source, look at the info and decide for yourself if it is reliable or biased. I'd probably use it regardless. It might be better to use it for facts. Or in your essay you can just say "One particular socialist soldier said..." then you're off the hook for any bias.

Serious answer: It depends on what the socialist soldier said.

Its too long to type out, but he basically recounts the war. There is no obvious bias like 'Charles Albert is a very bad man'. The recollection does tie in with other reports, however it threw me off that they would mention that the soldier, who they didn't care to name, was a socialist.

Couldn't you scan the source and post it up? Because it's what he said that counts. Sometimes, the examiners will throw you a curveball and put a source that says the exact opposite of what you would expect from the person saying it to try and catch you out, so it would help to see the post.

yeah sure

'Spurred on by Lombardy Aristocracy, Charles Albert declared war on Austria assuring other countries that he was marching to suppress republicanism. Other Italian rulers under popular pressure, let themselves be drawn into the way. The Kings plan at first seemed about to succeed. Not only Lombardy but even Venetia placed themselves in his hands. Then the outlook changed. When the other Italian rulers saw that the war was just designed to increase the power of Charles Albert, who might threaten their existence, then began deserting the cause. The Piedmontese army was demoralized by the inaction and the Austrian forces emerged from Verona. Charles Albert attacked and was defeated'

Thats the whole source, its a pretty sound recollection, but just because he doesn't give opinions doesn't necessarily mean that it isn't unbiased IMO.

It's hard to say; I'm better at German unification than Italian. I would say however, that he would be slightly biased against, as he says "spurred on by Lombardy aristocracy", as socialists hate the aristocrats. He also mentions that he pretended to "suppress republicanism" i.e. stop socialism, so he could be against him on this count too. I think you have to place the source in the context of socialism, and state that socialists don't like war, don't like the aristocrats trying to get more power etc., and in the source he mentions how Charles Albert was doing all this. So I would reach a conclusion saying that he was biased against Charles Albert.

Sorry if that was rambling; my brain works faster than I can type

Its alright mate, cheers for your thoughts, I handed it in today with the conclusion that he was slightly biased however not enough o completely make the source redundant.

Cheers for the help people.
