Whoops, you're right, it's a vinyl pickguard. Thought it was metal like the 50's P-Basses.

You can still spraypaint it, it just might not be as easy as if it was metal.

wait, they downgraded from the gold adonized aluminum to that crummy gold flavored plastic? yuck...

I've seen them around.

Worst comes to worst you can always buy a regular P-bass pickguard and drill new holes, or go the sparypaint route.
