All the best Grunge bands are well known i've found. Try looking at some bands famous Grunge musicians were in before their big bands.

Mother Love Bone? I don't know if you'd consider them grunge but they were a major influence for Alice In Chains, Pearl Jam (Stone Gossard was their guitarist), and soundgarden.
