I think that "Volume Box" thing is a gimmick. It supposed to be like an attenuator but its just a volume potentiometer (like on your guitar) in a metal housing.

For a decent attenuator you're going to have to drop at least $200-$500 US.

some amps have it as a built in feature. it drops the wattage of my marshall from 100 watts to 50 i believe?

My Mesa doesn't have it built in...I think. lol.

The wattage reducer is not meant to lower the volume. a 50% decrease in wattage is just a 3db drop in volume.

What amp do you have?
On a mesa it will be labelled "Master."

Lowering the effects loop volume will achieve roughly the same thing, not sure what that's labelled.
