Well, you're running el34, maybe try some 6l6s?
I don't give a shit if you listen to me or not

i am getting 6l6s and trying them out on tuesday... is there anything else that i could do? maybe some tips on how to tune the distortion channels themselves?

EL34's are very capable of metal tones, they're much more focused and tighter than 6L6's. I'd recommend using the Crunch channel. It's less buzzy and tighter than the Ultra channel. The EQ's are very sensitive, especially the Ultra channels active EQ. What settings have you been using?

although you hear a lot of "don't scoop your mids" on here, i've gotta ask, have you tried to scoop your mids ? some amps are very mid heavy (and to me sound like crap if you don't at least give your mids a quarter of a turn cut)
#12
like i said i dont have any settings. i havent had this amp for very long, and i am really at a loss on how to set the damn thing, or even where to start

The XXX has an active eq and can be hard to dial in. Starting with the controls at noon and working from there is your best choice.

so should i move them very slightly, or like an 8th turn? i need a general consensus: for teh brootalz tonez, should i use el34s or 6l6s? either way they will be winged c

It's a XXX, you should have known of the brightness problem somewhat.
Scooping your mids is the first port of call.

^ I use 6L6, if you don't like British sound I suggest you do the same.

If you're EQ'd loose, you'll sound loose anyway.

when i scooped the mids with my el34s it sounded uber dildos
should this be any different with the 6l6s? also. what kind of effect will the damp switch have on it?

I'm assuming "uber dildos" means bad? The 6l6s should make a difference, but the tubes aren't the only thing that will affect your tone.

I just meant that things like your speaker, pedals, guitar, EQing, and even smaller things like pickup height and strings will affect your tone too, it's not just the type of tubes.

Push it and find out?

Seriously, just use your ears...play around with the EQ and stuff until you get a sound you like, you can HEAR when things are getting closer to what you want, you don't need anyone to tell you what to do with the amp.

- turn the master volume up to 8, 9 or 10
- turn the channel volume down to 2, 3 or 4
- don't set any of the eq dials below 3 (it will cause tone suckage)
- don't set any of the eq dials over 8 (will drive preamp too hard leading to a noisy, harsh tone)
- avoid the "tight" setting on the damping switch
- use the crunch channel for rhythm metal tones.
- preamp tubes have a huge affect on these amps tone. Experiment with various brands.
